Nice book, shame about the history
on 26 November 2009
I was hugely disappointed with this book. It is beautifully produced, with superb reproductions of contemporary records and posters. There is little indication, however, that any original research went into the text of the book, which is flawed in its account of key events in a number of critical areas. As far as I can see, the text is based on a rehash of material produced in the early 1960s, before the British and German archives were available for public scrutiny, and is littered with errors of fact and omission. Comparison with (say) Alfred Price's well-researched account of Battle of Britain Day (15 September) reveals a wholly different picture of that day's critical events. Buy it for the reproductions of pilot's logs and ration books, but forget about it as serious history.
