An EXcellent Manga. As usual, the far future is a gritty and depressing place.. but there's plenty of fresh material to be squeezed from the genre yet, as Battle Angel Alita effortlessly shows!

Basic synopsis: Alita is a centuries-old cyborg, resembling a young girl, who is brought out of hibernation when dug out of a scrapheap. Given a body by a mechanic/bounty hunter, she embarks on journey of self-discovery... where do her instinctive powers of "Panzer Kunst" come from? What was her purpose of construction..? Will Batman escape from the Joker's clutches before Gotham is overrun with clowns? Tune in next week! Oops, sorry.

Back to the subject; this is a fantastic mix of gritty urban scenery, cyborgs of all cute/good/bad/ugly varieties, existential philosophising, and just a smattering of ultraviolence. You could draw parallels to a whole spectrum of influences: Ghost in the Shell, Blade Runner, 2000:AD comics, even Pinocchio. And it's better than the lot!

Battle Angel Alita easily stands equal to the works of Masamune Shirow (Appleseed, Ghost in the Shell, etc). I have ordered the next two Alita books in the series, I don't feel I'll be disappointed! Buy this book, NOW.

This is the new Viz comics 'right to left' 2nd edition of Battle Angel Alita.
Alita is an amazing example of early Manga artwork and was my first introduction into the vast world of Manga and Anime.
First written in 1991 by Yukito Kishiro this new edition has been re-launched for the western market with the eastern reading style, personally i think reading this way adds so much to the classic story and also preserves the artwork to how it was originally drawn.

The series itself in my opinion is one of the best cyborg sci-fi Manga stories available back then, starting off in the in the grim waste pile of Tiphares (the mega city that floats above) where a cybernetic doctor finds the damaged torso and head of a beautiful cyborg. once Alita is resurrected its becomes her quest to find out her past. The only history she has is her seemingly innate fighting abilities, which she decides to use as a bounty hunter.

This first book appears to have a simple story line and has some crude battle sequence's with some unlikely opponents but dont forget this is classic extreme Manga and more or less anything goes, and is a far cry from the usual demons and slimey foe.

In a in a grim place where all hopes and dreams are shattered this first book leaves you wondering about what lies ahead for the cute Alita, and this book 'Rusty Angel' paves the way for some of the most imaginative sci fi with some of the best twists i have found in a Manga series to date.

in this epic tale, Alita(actually I prefer her origional name: "Gally") rises from the masses of scrapyard with the help of a brilliant man, Ido. Gally, learns of Ido's secret night life as a "hunter-warrior". she then decides to become one herself. in doing this, she begins to find little tidbits of her forgotten past, showing in her dreams and actions. kishiro has me begging for more. his tale has left me with a new outlook of life and death. I very highly recomend this manga to anyone who can handle non-stop action, futureistic plots, and a heart-felt story.
