An EXcellent Manga. As usual, the far future is a gritty and depressing place.. but there's plenty of fresh material to be squeezed from the genre yet, as Battle Angel Alita effortlessly shows!
Basic synopsis: Alita is a centuries-old cyborg, resembling a young girl, who is brought out of hibernation when dug out of a scrapheap. Given a body by a mechanic/bounty hunter, she embarks on journey of self-discovery... where do her instinctive powers of "Panzer Kunst" come from? What was her purpose of construction..? Will Batman escape from the Joker's clutches before Gotham is overrun with clowns? Tune in next week! Oops, sorry.
Back to the subject; this is a fantastic mix of gritty urban scenery, cyborgs of all cute/good/bad/ugly varieties, existential philosophising, and just a smattering of ultraviolence. You could draw parallels to a whole spectrum of influences: Ghost in the Shell, Blade Runner, 2000:AD comics, even Pinocchio. And it's better than the lot!
Battle Angel Alita easily stands equal to the works of Masamune Shirow (Appleseed, Ghost in the Shell, etc). I have ordered the next two Alita books in the series, I don't feel I'll be disappointed! Buy this book, NOW.
