A paean to war and its victims,
By Stephen A. Haines (Ottawa, Ontario Canada) - See all my reviews (TOP 500 REVIEWER) (HALL OF FAME REVIEWER) (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Battaglie and Lamenti, 1600-60 (Audio CD)
This CD is a noble example of the 17th Century Italian mood. Music of "battles and laments" suggests a mixture of the exhilarating and the sombre, and this collection takes you through just such a range. In the 17th Century, battles were celebrated with musical compositions, invoked in later wars to inspire soldiers with past glories. But war, of course, breeds as much grief as grandeur. These pieces evoke the feelings of a nation acting as a cockpit for conquerors throughout the period. French and Austrian armies crisscrossed Italy as part of empire building. The music reflects the changing fortunes of people going from liberation to submission and back again. The Figueras - Savall team has once again delved into historical material to present us with an outstanding collection. They fulfill the composers' intention of personalising the full experiences of war. Opening with Samuel Scheidt's "Pavan" and "battle dance", which nicely encompasses the dual theme, they move to such composers as Gabrieli and Monteverdi. Monteverdi, so often pompous and melodramatic, is here seen in an unexpected mood. Arianna's Lament is rendered by Montserrat Figueras in her usual unmatchable style. No other vocalist can impart the mood of a woman's sorrow like this supreme Catalan talent. Through the remaining vocal pieces, Montserrat continues to arouse the emotional responses she so adroitly evokes in all her work. Alia Vox, a newcomer to the CD publication world, is rightly climbing the ranks of "first choice" when recording shopping. Savall and Figueras founded this company to ensure the production of their music, particularly reproducing Figueras' voice, meet the most exacting standards. They have succeeded admirably in their efforts. The sound quality is matchless, giving the listener the finest sense of being in their presence while playing. Savall's scholarship in the "early music" field is demonstrated in the excellent notes provided. A fine addition to anybody's collection, or a gift to be treasured by giver and recipient alike.

Nice background music for an evening of bridge (battles and lamentations),

This review is from: Battaglie and Lamenti, 1600-60 (Audio CD)
As far as I understand it this is another disc by Jordi Savall and the ensemble he formed called Hespèrion XXI. The disc has 12 tracks of Italian music from the mid-17th C, entitled "battles and lamentations". There are 4 vocal "lamenti" (naturally rather depressing) with the excellent soprano Montserrat Figueras, and 8 instrumental "battaglie" (naturally more dynamic and aggressive). The calmness of the "lamenti" provides an excellent backdrop to the dynamics and clarity of Montserrat Figueras's voice. The "battaglie" try to convey the action and power of the battle, but for me tend to provoke a greater sense of gaiety that the "lamenti" that tend to be a bit gloomy. I'm not sure how I came by this disc but it is nice background to a dinner party or an evening of bridge (nice echo of battles and lamentations).

Battaglie E Lamenti 1600-1660,
By Bjorn Viberg - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Battaglie and Lamenti, 1600-60 (Audio CD)
Battaglie E Lamenti 1600-1660 is a 2000 Alia Vox recording under the direction of Jordi Savall who leads the Hesperion XXI. Silke Leopold has written the music notes and these have been translated into English by Jaqueline Minett. Amazing art work on the cover. Highly recommended indeed. 5/5.
