Amazon.co.uk Review

Holy camp site, Batman! After a fabulously successful season on TV, the campy comic book adventure hit the big screen, complete with painful puns, outrageous supervillains, and fights punctuated with word balloons sporting such onomatopoeic syllables as "Pow!", "Thud!", and "Blammo!" Adam West's wooden Batman is the cowled vigilante alter ego of straight-arrow millionaire Bruce Wayne and Bruce Ward's Robin (aka Dick Grayson, Bruce's young collegiate protégé) his overeager sidekick in hot pants. Together they battle an unholy alliance of Gotham City's greatest criminals: the Joker (Cesar Romero, whooping up a storm); the Riddler (giggling Frank Gorshin); the Penguin (cackling Burgess Meredith); and the purr-fectly sexy Catwoman (Lee Meriwether slinking in a skin-tight black bodysuit). The criminals are, naturally, out to conquer the world, but with a little help from their unending supply of utility belt devices (bat shark repellent, anyone?), our dynamic duo thwarts their nefarious plans at every turn. Since the TV show ran under 30 minutes an episode (with commercials), the 105-minute film runs a little thin--a little camp goes a long way--but fans of the small-screen show will enjoy the spoofing tone throughout. Leslie H. Martinson directs Lorenzo Semple's screenplay like a big-budget TV episode minus the cliffhanger endings. --Sean Axmaker, Amazon.com

This dvd is Region 2 and is the same as the other 1966 Batman-The Movie, Region 2 dvd. It is also the same price but this issue includes a cardboard box and a Batman keyring which will also shine a red light whilst you hold the button down. I had originally hoped that it actually shone the Bat-signal onto a wall but it's not that fancy! Otherwise both Region 2 editions share the same extras ("Holy interactive menus Batman!", "Precisely, Robin!" spoken by the real actors!). There is the commentary by Burt Ward and Adam West, the Batman featurette with the now much older Burt and Adam talking about the general background of the movie (Adam says the movie was to help sell the series overseas), the Batmobile Revealed featurette, theatrical trailer and teaser trailer, and stills from Adam's own collection plus stills from behind the scenes of the movie's production. There are subtitles in thirteen different languages including English but these are only for the movie and don't include the extras I'm sorry to say. It's slightly camp, it's hilarious and, given the parity of pricing, you should buy this edition. Batman and Robin face the combined power of Catwoman, the Joker, the Riddler and the Penguin.

Holy marathon Batman. 17 May 2011

The Joker, The Riddler, The Penguin & Catwoman have joined forces to wreak havoc on Gotham City......and then the World! Can Batman & Robin save the day?

Remember when Batman was fun? Not a serious scene in sight, no tales of revenge or personal demons to burst from the screen in a day glow burst of thunder. For many of us who grew up in the 60s and 70s this was the only Batman that mattered, pure unadulterated fun, all campy veneer and skin tight Technicolor suits. This full length outing for the dynamic duo is of course just an extended episode from the joyous TV series, just add a bit more money and you got a Bat Boat, a Bat Helicopter and erm, erm, Bat Shark Repellent! It's just wonderful I tell you.

How any of the actors kept straight faces is anyones guess, but they did, and they collectively delighted millions of children and like minded adults in a way that can't be described to the none believers, thank holy god for the caped crusaders that always kept us safe. 8/10

Footnote: Watching now in my middle years I ask any red blooded male this; is there anything more sexy than Lee Meriwether in the Catwoman suit? No wonder my Dad was a fan of the show back then...........

KAPOW!
4 super villains against 2 super hero's...! Surely the Caped Crusaders can't win this battle....can they?

You know the format and you know the style. Batman has moved on from the slightly camp and whacky 60's vibe that this film portrays, but it stands alone as a superb cameo of the time and is played in great spirit by a top cast that includes Burgess Meredith (the Penguin) and Cesar Romero (the Joker) great stars, which shows the respect and popularity this format of Batman had back then.
The Riddler is fantastic and holds a certain maniacal menace, out of step with the more 'evil' counter villains.
The story and plot are meaningless and it is all about the characters and spoofing.
Sit back hold your snazzy little Bat-tastic keyring torch and enjoy the show.

Extras are plenty - Cmmentary from Batman- West and Robin - Ward and there is a featurette showing off the Batmobile. There are also some 110+ still images from cast and set plus the trailers with a few other things thrown in.

Picture quality is fine 16:9 (1.85:1) and the sound is basic stereo.

Holy Marathon Batman! I'm Getting A Stitch.

And you will.
