Book Description

9 May 2006 Batman: No Man's Land (Book 1)
Written by Bob Gale And Devin K. Grayson; Art by Alex Maleev, Dale Eaglesham and others After suffering a cataclysmic earthquake, the U.S. government has deemed Gotham City as uninhabitable and ordered all citizens to leave. It is now months later and those that have refused to vacate "No Man's Land" live amidst a citywide turf war in which the strongest prey on the weak. As gangs terrorize the ravaged populace, the Scarecrow uses a church relief project as a real life lab to test his experiments in fear. But with the return of the vigilante, Batman, and the appearance of an enigmatic new Batgirl, justice returns to Gotham. This volume is the first of five that recounts the NO MAN'S LAND storyline.

Amazon Review

"I tried pretending that things were the same, that only the terrain had changed. I knew what I was working for-Gotham's redemption--but I didn't know how to get there." The finest Batman tales confront and explore the fundamental aspects of the character's extensive mythos and, in this expertly rendered story, the very fabric of Batman's relentless war on crime is ruthlessly torn away. Based on the comics' mammoth story arc of the same name, No Man's Land takes Batman's extremely measured approach to crime fighting and plunges it into a fearsomely primal arena. When a cataclysmic earthquake decimates Gotham City, what was once a crime-ridden city is reduced to a feral community--an abyss of mass starvation and gang warfare, abandoned by the US Government and sealed off from the outside world. The Batman must radically adapt to this vicious battleground, where even his most sacred vows may be sacrificed. Acclaimed crime novelist and regular Batman writer Greg Rucka must be applauded, having condensed dozens of comic books into a compelling narrative, imbued with depth and realism. Rucka has taken full advantage of the strong premise, striking an equilibrium between the requisite action and the stark desperation of urban disaster--reflected in his sharp portrayal of such established characters. Rather than the indomitable superhero, Rucka's Batman is one who must face the enormity of his situation in order to conquer: "No Man's Land is too big, too dark and too wild to be tamed by any one will". This is an exquisite opportunity to witness the extraordinary world of Batman colliding with vivid human drama, and will certainly draw a wide audience. --Danny Graydon --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Review

"Pittsburgh City Paper"Rucka's descriptive descriptive narrative is realistic, compassionate, and at times a little too vivid...Rucka is a man of the '90s, a voice of the '90s. There is hope. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good read, very entertaining. 16 Jan 2002

Format:Paperback
I've read very few comic adaptions, but the ones I have read have been the better ones. Death of Superman, breaking of the Bat etc.

This definitely ranks up with the best. I'm still reading this, but find myself coming back for more. I'm really enjoying it.

You get to see more of the characters in books, more than you do in comics. You get in their heads, you see how they think. The 'bad guys' are much more interesting than they ever have been, you see just how warped the Joker really is, a completly new side to Bane. You also see Batman in a more vulnerable light than you have before

Very good read, I enjoyed it.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good adaptation and worth reading 6 Jun 2001
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
The old saying about a picture being worth a thousand words holds particularly true in the case of comics, which must make writing a novelisation of a comic-book story a major undertaking, especially when the comic-book story in question is something the size of "Batman: No Man's Land." Gotham City, after being levelled by an earthquake, has been cut off from the rest of the USA and swiftly descends into feudalism, with territories ruled by street gangs and criminals, including many of Batman's enemies. The only forces of order are a small group of Gotham police officers and, of course, Batman and his allies. However, they soon realise that traditional law and order may no longer have any place in No Man's Land, and the question arises; where do they draw the line? Greg Rucka has done a remarkably good job of novelising the story, condensing 1,000-plus pages of comics into a 460-page book without sacrificing any of the main action. Most of the potential gaps are neatly filled by Oracle's journal of No Man's Land. A lot of the book focuses on the supporting cast, telling the tale from the viewpoint of a number of characters, both hero and villain; this is a good move, as trying to centre the whole thing around Batman would probably have made for a fairly tedious read. Switching between different perspectives keeps the action moving and Rucka gives convincing portrayals of characters as diverse as the Huntress, Commisioner Gordon and, rather disturbingly, the Joker. Overall, this is one of the better comic-book novelisations and well worth reading, if only because it's a lot easier to carry around than the comics

3.0 out of 5 stars A good, if overwrought story with some surprises
Every now and again I read a low-art book. Something like a novelization of a movie or some other such pulp fiction. While, I hate to admit it, Batman: No Man's Land is such pulp. Read more
