Batman: A Celebration of 75 Years makes a fascinating read for anyone not too familiar with the history of the comic book character but still interested in how Batman got to where he is today. It's fascinating to compare and contrast the storytelling/narrative style of the old comics with the new.

However, I'm not sure I could recommend this to everyone - the over reliance on narrator boxes in the older material makes them very difficult to really get into and enjoy. Modern writing and drawing have really helped to push the art forward.

The book's well bound in a high gloss hard back with a striking dust cover design (pictured). The paper quality also feels great to touch. There's a lot of material to read through - all arranged in chronological order with occasional forwards to put the stories into the context of the time.

It's clearly aimed at a younger audience but doesn't talk down to the reader, so older fans (such as myself) can enjoy this too, if they're interested in getting a glimpse of how the Dark Knight has changed over the years.

I imagine that if you already have a good knowledge of Batman's history and have read the older stories contained in this book then there won't be much new for you here. The forwards are very cursory due to the book trying to hit such a wide audience. More specialist/in depth writing would have been a nice touch.

I would not have realised 2014 was 75 years of Batman without this graphic hardback! I bought this off my local comic store and the owner was jealous because management won't allow their staff to read big volumes :D. Even though a few die-hard Bat fans might argue this 2014 edition isn't necessary, I agree with comic book guy that it's an awesome book.

And if you need more details, the stories go back all the way to 1939, in their original art prints and story-telling. With a few, short (a good thing) excerpts from the writers/artists, it's nice reading about Batman's true origins and his evolution, over the years, through stories that just leap off the page.

The only downside is that they're selected, short stories and have no continuation. But it's a great starting point to a build a collection. 5/5.

I'm definitely going to buy the accompanying Joker 75th.
