5.0 out of 5 stars The best super hero game around 26 May 2010

I downloaded the demo as soon as it hit Live and enjoyed playing it. I was going to get the full game when it was released, but instead went for GTA 4 Stories from Liberty City, Modern Warfare 2 and Bioshock 2. In a way I am glad, because I have the GOTY edition at a great price from Amazon. This is basically the same game but with 6 extra challenge maps and the game can be played in 3D, it comes with 2 pairs of glasses. The case even has a sleeve over which is in holographic 3D which looks amazing.

The visuals are stunning to look at, and the voice over acting is utterly brilliant for a game. This would have made a fantastic film, the story is that good.

Controls are easy with a minimal of button presses. To attack you basically press one button, and using the joystick to control where you want to attack. If attacking someone in front and someone comes up from behind, move the joystick to face him and attack and Batman will turn and attack with a kick or punch, it is that simple. You start the game with only 1 weapon, your batarang. Aim with the left trigger and when locked on a target (reticule turns yellow) fire with the right or a quick double tap with the left trigger to throw quickly. As you progress, you gain more weapons and accessories to use in your quest. Pressing the right bumper button shoots a rope and you can hook onto objects and be pulled up, like ledges on higher floors, gargoyles etc. Great for moving quickly without being seen in the darker roof areas. Pressing the left bumper takes you into a mode where you see people as blue (unarmed) or red (armed) even through walls and floors, great for seeing looming trouble. You can also see places to grab onto, air ducts to open etc.

Now this is what Batman is about!

This is pure, unadulterated Batman. An engaging, excellently written storyline by veterans of the renouned Batman Animated Series, and featuring several cast members from said series, this is a game that you'll enjoy several times over, and with plenty of extras to unlock and find in this open-world game, you'll certainly get your money's worth.

The Game of the Year Edition comes with all previous DLC on the disk, and it's pretty good. Alternating between "slugfests" involving Batman going against grunts of varying difficulties in various locations in and around Arkham (and one in Gotham itself) and stealth modes where Batman has to fulfil several ways of taking down grunts, it's very challenging and actually quite hard, even on the Easy difficulty setting.

The graphics are supreme, although due to the way the game works you may spend most of your time in "Detective Mode", which takes away this aspect considerably.

The combat, while simplistic (three-button mash, pretty much), is awesome to watch, and when you get a combo right (there's achievements for 20 and 40 hits combos), you'll revel in your mastery (and mock the goons that you've just pasted) for a long long time.

Featuring cameos or references to pretty much every major villain in Batman's history, and several not so major ones (Tweedledum and Tweedledee anyone?) this game is a fantastic game in it's own right.

As for the 3D, I don't really notice it myself, but that's just me.

Other people have reviewed Batman: Arkham Asylum and covered the main points, so I'll reiterate them very quickly then focus on the 3D feature that I believe is new to this Game Of The Year Edition.

This game captures the spirit of Batman better than ANY superhero game has ever done before. Not just that, it is one of the best games of recent years in terms of gameplay and story driven action. Batman always had the best gadgets and he uses them to great effect in this game. The villains are more comic book / TV series than any of the Batman films, and they are all the better because of it. Not many games can score well on both action AND stealth. This the game Sam Fisher plays in his downtime.

I bought the Game Of The Year Edition because of great reviews for the original and because the idea of 3D gaming intrigued me. There are two 3D glasses included, both with different designs. I started the game with the 3D on and was blown away by it. I don't know if it's having a high-def television or the 60Hz frame-rate that makes it possible, but this TriOvis system actually works - not like when you get some glasses with a film and it turns out to be so rubbish, you instead watch the regular version. I can't get my point across strong enough so I'm swiTCHING TO CAPITALS.

THIS IS THE BEST 3-D YOU HAVE EVER SEEN! There is genuine depth and it looks absolutely amazing! I played the whole game through with the 3-D on and I am still playing the challenges with the glasses on. I have never played this game without the 3D, it is that good.

I'm being completely honest when I say that this was such a great gaming experience for me that should the sequel come out and not have the same 3D capability, I would not buy it.
