Meat Loaf s Bat Out Of Hell is one of the most iconic albums of the seventies. Released in October 1977 it has sold in excess of 40 million copies worldwide. In the UK it is certified 10 x Platinum for more than 3 million sales. This concert from the Stadthalle Offenbach in Germany was filmed in June 1978 for the German Rockpalast TV series and perfectly captures the raw excitement of the original Bat Out Of Hell tour with Meat Loaf dominating the stage and the album s songwriter Jim Steinman contributing heavily. Most of the tracks from the album are featured alongside covers of Johnny B Goode and River Deep, Mountain High . This is a superb film of the original Bat Out Of Hell tour.

There's a "Paradise by the Dashboard Light" video on Youtube that has over four million views. Meat Loaf and Karla DeVito are lip-synching to the album vocals by Meat Loaf and Ellen Foley. If you've never seen the videos of Meat and Karla performing this song live, buy this DVD. Raunchy and hilarious. (This Rockpalast show and a performance on Old Grey Whistle Test are the only live 1978 tour videos of "Paradise" that I've seen.)

"Bat out of Hell" is the best ever version.

Covers of "Johnny B. Goode" and "River Deep, Mountain High" are included on this DVD. They're not on the USA version because of copyright restrictions. The best part of the show is the "River Deep, Mountain High" duet by Meat and Karla followed by the "Johnny B. Goode" reprise.

The U.K. version isn't edited like the U.S. version. Great footage from the BOOH tour 1978.

It opens with Jim Steinman sat at the piano playing a medley intro of The Storm / Bat out of Hell like you've never heard it played before, and Meat Loaf sat at the soundboard listening to the original sound recording of Bat out of Hell.
You will be treated to interviews with Karla De Vito, Max Weinberg, Rory Dodd, David Sonnenberg, Ellen Foley, Todd Rundgren and last but not least Kasim Sulton
There are various clips from the original showing of The Old Grey Whistle Test, as well as live footage too! Hear Jim's rendition of Two out of three, the country version, and played through the soundboard the Eagles style. Meat shows that after 22 years he still has perfect timing whilst playing with the soundboard. It is an excellent production all credit to ISIS Productions, it will appeal right across the board to Meat and Jim fans at every level. Anyone who has ever heard the album Bat out of Hell will not want to miss this, the story behind Bat Out Of Hell! Only down side is it's not long enough!

It has to be said that the recording quality hasn't stood the test of time and there doesn't seem to be any restoration. The quality of the picture is pretty terrible most of the time (ultra soft focus and very dark) and there are times where is almost impossible to see what is going on (even on a large HD screen).

The sound is OK compared to what it must have been live but it has to be said that the mixing is pretty terrible (there is a chunk of Bat where Meat is singing full blast with no sound because his microphone is off). Generally the balance is pretty shoddy.

So why 5 stars ???? because it is fantastic to get to see Meat Loaf (and there is a lot of him) back in the 70s and to see the band and lets face it this is as good as it gets.

Having seen Meat Loaf a number of times in recent years I was beginning to think his voice was so wrecked that it was time he hung up his mic but it is interesting to hear that even back at the beginning he couldn't sing in tune to save his life. What his voice lacks in quality he compensates for in sheer energy and massive ego.

If this all sounds a bit negative I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed the concert and I am of to see Meat again in a couple of months. There is something enduringly appealing about just how hard he tries and even when his voice misses the notes by a mile you know damn well the audience will be there to drown him out on the difficult bits.

Can anyone seriously imagine a record company employing Meat Loaf today if he turned up as he was back in the good old days?? And yet he is a true cultural icon of the late 20th and early 21st centuries - a genuine one off and long may he continue ;)

This product is mainly the story of how Jim Steinman and Meat Loaf got together and created one of the best selling albums of all time. On this DVD you have many diferant interviews with Jim Steinman, Todd Rundgren, Kasim Sultan, Meat Loaf and many other members who took part in the creation of this master piece. The DVD is very well put together and is very interesting to watch. Sadly it contains only one live performence at the end which is Heaven can wait which is performed in holland in 1994. All in all i would say it is a great buy and a very good piece of entertainement if you are a Meat fan like myself.

Included along with the video are exclusive interviews with meat loaf, jim stienman and director micheal bay. this video is sixty minutes of white hot rock and when wathching the music video to id do any thing for love you will see why he got to number one in 1993.
