Collier's book is outstandingly written. Unlike most literature on the Zapatistas, Collier does not lapse into romanticism or ideology. Instead, he traces the events and processes that led up to the 1994 uprising in Chiapas. He examines how economic and sociological change - particularly its migratory effects within eastern Chiapas, the heart of the rebellion - affected the religious, cultural and political life of Chiapaneco campesinos. He is lucid, accurate and fair in his treatment of the subject, yet does not leave the reader baffled by facts or jargon. Definately a must for all those interested in Chiapas, the Zapatista movement and indigenous identity.

Collier has produced an astounding work of great depth and breadth that situates the Zapatista movement within a political, economic and historical context. He avoids the sycophantic and romantic renderings of the Chiapas rebellion and has written an engaging and highly readable account of the development of Zapatista ideology. This is truly the best book on Zapatistas on the market and is a definative guide to the academic, activist and those simply curious to know more. Collier deserves a round of applause.

This book is amazing, definetely one of the best out there. Dont be fooled by its cheap price, its well worth three times that amount if youre an avid chiapas rebel. For those of you looking for your first Chiapas book, this is definetely the one to choose.
