Double Bass legend Paul Chambers is probably best known for his work with Miles Davis on the classic Kind of Blue and numerous other Miles recordings that have become landmarks of jazz.

This 1957 recording is from the same era and features Kenny Burrell, Hank Jones and Art Taylor working together on album that is unsurpassed for its footprint for how a rhythm section should sound.

Everybody gives each other space and is no one is indulgent and with the choice of classic tunes this album is a constant delight.

Do not be put off by the almost mournful intro to the opening track Yesterdays - this is an album that both educates and entertains to the highest level and at a remarkable 74 minutes is an extended masterclass.

A wickedly cool album that lives up to its title!
- We can really hear this Master letting rip with bow and plucking like a demon, right on top of the mix!
No other bassist comes close ...
- Bless You Paul you have brought 1950s Jazz alive for me!

PC was a genius 28 May 2010
Format:Audio CD
I love this record - to my untrained ears it is a perfect meeting of understated be-bop jazz and chamber music (forgive the pun). The way he bowed the bass sends shivers of pleasure down my spine. To my knowledge PC didn't record any other stuff as leader in a hornless band, which is a shame because this is where his sound really shines. The other musicians, who obviously all speak for themselves, are also clearly having a lot of fun. If you like the interplay here then try PC's work with Art Taylor and Red Garland - more melodic and prettier tunes, less ambitious maybe, but also a great showcase for this bassman. The only other record I know by this musician as leader is Whims of Chambers, which I've lost, and includes the splendid 'tale of the fingers' in trio. If anyone knows other records by PC please advise.
