Really great interpretations of leading, historic bass players. Very good quality recordings and transcriptions. You really get a feel for the players style and they have amazing players - none more so than the great James Jamerson. Well thumbed. I learnt to play all the lines except one. I don't think I can ever let this book out of my collection. Can't wait to have time to go back to it. If you can get a portable bass amp (like the Pandora Px5D) so you can hear your playing and the CD examples together over headphones/speaker, I copied them onto my ogg/mp3 player.

40 licks 6 Oct 2011
Format:Paperback
Its good because nobody else seems to have done this before. Ed picks ten of the most influential R&B bass players and gives a guide to their sound and style. Beware that this averages out to only 4 licks per subject which hardly does justice to some of these guys. Also I don't know if its a copyright issue but Ed does not always say which songs the lick/riff comes from. But he also supplies a good discography so its all in there somewhere. Its such a huge subject but this is a great start. He says himself he could do a volume II with other bass players he left out. If you are interested in R&B bass this is useful bridge to the point where you can pick these bass lines apart yourself. See also Standing in the Shadows of Motown: The Life and Music of Legendary Bassist James Jamerson (book and CD).

Format:Paperback
Only 8 pages of my favorite bass player James Jamerson. Very sad that there was no Motown's Bob Babbitt in this book. Included CD had some clue on it that caused problem to play the CD, but that kind of thing can happen, so it doesn't make the book bad. I thought this book would have had some complete Jamerson's songs in it but no - only some ex's...
