Product Description

Product Description

This work provides an introduction to Basque and Catalan nationalism. The two movements have much in common, but have differed in the strategies adopted to further their cause. Basque nationalism, in the shape of the military wing of ETA, took the path of violence, spawning an efficient terrorist campaign, while Catalan nationalism is more accommodating and peaceful. Conversi examines and compares the history, motives and methods of these two movements, considering the influence of such aspects of nationalist mobilization as: the choice of language, race and descent; the consequences of large-scale immigration; and the causes and effects of social violence.

Conversi's study brings us an easy-reading, light but not superficial, comprehensive analisys on Basque and Catalan nationalisms, its relationship with Spain and the facts explaining its different development.I would indicate it for everyone, from the University Doctor to a tourist. It helps us to understand our world.

This book is probably one of the best book I ever read on the subject of Spanish/Iberian studies. It is also a must-read for students and scholars of sociology, european studies, political geography and political science. It presents a theory which has universal implications and goes much beyond the specific case study and even nationalism studies at large. Its theory should be properly understood by everyone dealing with the roots of terrorism. It is also a crucial reappraisal of the role of culture in all political processes.

Conversi's book 9 Feb 2010
This book provides you with a complete panoramic view on Basque and Catalan nationalism, with a simple but concrete style of writing. It shows how the two nationalist movements rose during the second half of the nineteenth century, the discrimination they suffered during the Francoism and the present state of things since the fall of Franco and the restoration of the democratic Spanish state. The book focuses also on particular values that had a central role in the rising of the nationalist movement, that is language for the Catalans and race for the Basques. Concerning the Basque nationalism there's also an entire chapter on the rise of political violence. I think Conversi's book is a good point of departure for everyone who wants to know more about these indipendent Spanish states.
