Review

"Masterton puts realistic, carefully drawn characters into bizarre, otherworldly situations and lets us watch what happens to them. This novel is lighter than most of his work but just as suspenseful and just as frightening" Booklist on House of Bones "This disturbing concoction blends metaphysical musing with old-fashioned blood and guts. Not for the faint-hearted" Kirkus Reviews on The Painted Man "Masterton's edge-of-the-seat storytelling and sympathetic characters make for a compelling read" Library Journal on Edgewise"

4.0 out of 5 stars Not quite a classic. But good 1 Mar 2010
Format:Hardcover
Just finished this and its very much a book thats hard to put down. A tale about a talented zoologyst attempting to breed mythological hybrid creatures for stem cell research and what went wrong with his failure but someone elses success and the life threatening consequences of it. Gripping and building up nicely, then the ending just seemed a bit rushed. But thoroughly recommended though. A good read

I just finished Basilisk. What a roller coaster ride! Nathan the main protagonist started over really slowly but upped his game in the end and really made up for being a bone head at the start. What I wanted was a sort of nasty Jurassic park with evil basilisk doing in loads of people. What I got was Jurassic park meets blind panic. A horrifying thriller that builds up a hugely satisfying conclusion. Shows that Graham has lost none of the grit that made Charnel House such an amazing read all those years ago. He could have written that novel just for me.
Remember whatever you do don't try to stare down a basilisk!

3.0 out of 5 stars Simple, not condescending 2 Jun 2011
By Mr. G. Battle VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback
Basilisk is a little light on horror by the usual Masterton standards, however despite the simple nature of the tale, there is no lack of effort to make it interesting. Unfortunately there are a few unrealistic components within Basilisk that disturb the flow, asking just too much of the reader and this breaks the narrative flow. What could be simple horror crosses the border in to fantasy and it doesn't pull it off. There's enough story and character development to keep you turning the pages, however it probably won't end up in your favourite Masterton list.

I enjoyed this book very much and found it to be significantly different from other horror titles from the same author. The plot line is fast moving and maintains its grip on the reader. This is as much science fiction as it is horror. Highly recommended.
