Book Description

1 Oct 2003
Permaculture is an approach to sustainable living that is spreading throughout the world. Using nature as a model, permaculture is primarily a design system. Its principles can enable us to provide for our needs for food, water, shelter, energy and community in ways that are healthy for both people and the environment. The Basics of Permaculture Design, first published in Australia in 1996, is an excellent introduction to the principles of permaculture, including design processes and the tools needed for developing sustainable gardens, farms, and larger communities. Packed with useful tips, clear illustrations and a wealth of experience, The Basics of Permaculture Design guides you through designs for gardens, urban and rural properties; water harvesting systems; animal systems; permaculture in small spaces like balconies and patios; and farms, schools and ecovillages. There is even a chapter about appropriate technology, covering photovoltaic; wind and hydro-power; pumping water; and cooking devices such as hayboxes and solar food dryers. This is a both a DIY guide for the enthusiast and a useful reference for permaculture designers.

5.0 out of 5 stars grasping the nettle at last 10 Sep 2009
Format:Paperback
Permaculture has developed a reputation for being a type of agriculture. This is a beautifully crafted book for moving you away from that narrow description.

Many of the principles of permaculture are covered in enough depth to encourage you to take the next step i.e. to try it for yourself. My expectations are also that you would come back to this book more than most in times of permaculture crisis in your project.

As a reader living in the UK I found Ross Mars turned many of my conventionally held views around, not least that she is writing from OZ and so north faces the sun and the prevailing climate is not damp and cold. However her clear knowledge on water management gained from dry climates should be taken into account even in UK.

The book is about the land being more than just a place to grow food. It sets food production sustainably along side shelter and your own energy production.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent tips and ideas 14 July 2014

Format:Paperback
Fabulous book. Purchased for ongoing organic gardening project. Food for thought...

The book is concise and well laid out. It contains numerous well taken pictures and comprehensive information.

The information contained is in depth enough to provide sustained interest to more experienced gardeners but also explains things in a down to earth way ideal for beginners. This book is an inspirational text which I would highly recommend - great for reading from cover to cover but also ideal as a quick reference.

I would recommend this book to other Amazon readers with an interest in Organic Gardening.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great one stop shop for a broad overview of Permaculture 19 Oct 2010
By Limey - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This was the ideal introduction I needed to talk some what intelligently about the back-in-vogue topic of permaculture. The book is written very well as a quick reference guide particularly considering the breadth of the subject matter.

4.0 out of 5 stars A well written introduction and perspective builder. 6 Feb 2014
By Neil Johnson - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I very much appreciated this book. What put me in a place of respect for it was its' dialogue on misconceptions and some lack of practicality that people who are attracted to permaculture approach with, and so that can be associated with permaculture. There is some thoroughness in this book and I feel it was very much worth the purchase as a designer.

I was really surprised with this book. Actually, I bought it blindly, with no recomendations.
When I read it, I felt relieved to see that it was so well written, with excellent theory and beautifull and clear drawings.
The writter sais his opinions, wich went very well with what I already believed.
Sustainability and Respect with yourself and nature is what this book brings.
