Product Description

The seventh book in the award-winning "Basics Design" series, "Grids" focuses on the construction and ordering of the page and screen through the use of the grids. The grid features as a strong element in many areas of design, and presents both the student and practitioner alike with the opportunity to ground their work in solid foundations. This book explores not only how to construct grids, but, more fundamentally, why a designer should construct grids at all. Through detailed investigation of the principles behind grid design, this book will inform and advance your understanding of this key design component, allowing you to devise grids with ease and precision for any situation. Contemporary work is supported by concise descriptions, technical expansions and diagrammatic visualisations, enabling the reader to fully understand the work being discussed. True to the other books in the "Basics Design" series, "Grids" is an example in its own right. A reference section, set on a series of different grids, demonstrates the principles discussed in earlier chapters, and the book will serve as a valuable resource and companion to other books in the series. This book is suitable for students of graphic design and established professionals, general public wishing to learn more about design basics, and anyone interested in developing their design skills and knowledge of modern graphics solutions.

Like most of these ambrose series they are an introduction to the topic. Comprehensive guide with lots of visual examples. I am a new graphic design student and this is a basic grid guide and an introduction to the whole subject matter. The book covers all mediums of media from print to web design. Good buy!

Basic Design: Grid 18 May 2009
Format:Paperback
The book explains how humans read or scan pages, be they paper or webpage based. The book gives the theory behind good grid design which is complimented by a large number of examples of good grid design. The numerous examples from real life stimulate new ideas.

Great information and fun read 9 May 2009
By Jay A. Ellefson - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Grids has very nice examples of work to give you ideas. Wonderful for the beginner and would make a good reference for the professional as well. I like how it lists different kinds of grids and tells you how to execute them with tiny tidbits such as how to ensure a picture will be in line with text.

One reviewer of Ambrose's book don't like the white on black type or black on yellow because they find it had to read and feel like it is an eye sore but I couldn't disagree more. I think it is interesting and easy to read.
Great design book! 25 May 2011

This book is great. Especially for those starting out in the design world. It's pretty easy to understand and easy to navigate. Has a clear structure, goals and illustrated examples for each subject. It is essential for those who want to know more about the foundation of the layout, so they can organize effectively the elements on a page. Is both theoretical and practical guidelines.
