Book Description

18 Nov 2007 2940373620 978-2940373628
This first book in the Basics Architecture series explores the concepts and techniques used to represent architecture. A broad array of techniques employed to develop architectural ideas are described, ranging from the way in which sketches are used to develop conceptual ideas, through to the working drawings and details required for the construction of buildings. The book covers both two-dimensional and three-dimensional methods of representation and shows a variety of media, from those used in freehand sketching, through to cutting-edge computer modeling and drawing techniques. Using examples from leading international architects and designers along with more experimental student work, a broad range of interpretations, possibilities and applications are demonstrated.

This is an excellent reference tool containing useful explanations of techniques such as sketch, scale, orthographic and 3D drawings, modelling, layout and presentation.

I found that this book covers topics of representation that many conventional books do not, for example, the merits of using sketchbooks throughout the design process as well as the importance of conceptual sketches and diagrams. It is also full of inspiring examples of work including images from influential designers such as Steven Holl Architects and Morphosis.

The author gives advice on which types of materials to use for different effects and there is also a handy reference section on standard paper sizes towards the back of the book.

3.0 out of 5 stars Something to keep on your side for rule of thumb 2 Sep 2011

This covers the Basic rules that you need to remember throughout your architectural education. Sometimes people forget the real idea of what things really mean in terms of technique. This book verbally and visually explain the importance of each drawing technique and how the combination of all, are essential to building up a project. Overall, this book is a break down of a vague summary of the traditional backbones of architecture drawing. Explaining the significance on how traditional rules apply in our "new work" in the "real world" of architecture.
Good reading material for those who are "beginning" to study architecture, it gives you an overall picture of what you need to understand. I was not impressed with the detail drawing page placement layouts. I felt that it was crammed on the details and section cut drawings, they could of been very successful examples . These are crucial example drawings that students seek visually in order to have an understanding of proper line weights and labeling placement. Since this book caters to students, I wouldn't be stingy with the pages and dedicate more page space for the work being displayed. I rather blow up the elements that are considered important representation techniques. Instead of blowing up Pretty pictures that don't really convey or teach much. The creation of this book was a good attempt, but probably rushed at the end when it came to editing. Hopefully, the next edition is stronger or cheaper for what is worth.
