I got this book knowing only the absolute basics of virology and found it incredibly useful. It's actually an interesting read as well as an informative one - you could read a chapter and enjoy it, as opposed to a lot of textbooks that send you straight to sleep.
If you want something that covers all the necessary basics of this subject, but that also has quite a lot of advanced information and principles too, I'd definitely recommend this book.

This latest (3rd) edition of Basic Virology is a very user-friendly, and wallet-friendly, introduction to the basics of virology. The book has a sound balance of text and figures and coverage of topics that allow for enjoyable reading and further contemplation.
The broad contents make it a sufficiently useful book for university students undertaking undergraduate or graduate modules in virology and from different courses (such as medics and microbiology students).
This book does have a nice chapter focusing appropriately on HIV and AIDS. For those seeking a more advanced text-book and more information on other viruses, I would recommend the comprehensive, but pricey, 'Fields Virology'.

As a physicist new to virology this was an excellent introduction to the field. THe fact that the book was last updated 2003 doesn't matter in the least since it is providing a basic introduction to the topic. Once you have read this book and become familiar with the basic ideas, terminology and classification of viruses it is relatively straightforward to read any recent scientific paper on the topic. Of particular importance is the way the authors emphasize the looseness of virus classification and the necessity to keep an open mind.
