As this book is called Basic stair building don't expect too much intricate work . I must disagree with the reviewer who claims the absence of Newel post work. Turn to chapter 5 and you'll find it !
This book does what it claims to do, so therefore the work contained is very basic. However for apprentices who need to get the basics right first I think this would be a good reference. Also the photos are black and white and a little unclear. So maybe a little updating wouldn't go astray, room for improvement.

basic staibuilding by Scott Schuttner is a very basic book at best it does not show you any newel post work and no bull nosed step at all very disapointing ;to much detail on making a stair well when the book is named stairbuilding very mis-leading

This book is what it claims to be BASIC information on basic stairs. I would say if you want to build a straight flight of stairs without having too much prior knowledge this book should help you achieve your goal. It's a book that just about anyone can get to grips with from novice DIY or Pro. If you are an advanced woodworker you might want something which covers the subject in greater depth. It's not too complicated to read so won't put you off and is just fine for building your first straight flight.

Excellent book , Easy to understand, If you have any question needed to be answered this book will go a long way in finding what you need to know.
A rubbish book. Only shows that basic straight staircases and not the half suspended type. There is no colour, little diagrams, just lots of text which really isn't helpful when you are trying to build a staircase by diagram and not instructions.
