More About the Author

Colin Beveridge (1977-) is a maths confidence coach for Flying Colours Maths and co-author of the Little Algebra Book.

He holds a PhD in Mathematics from the University of St Andrews and worked for several years on NASA's Living With A Star project at Montana State University, where he came up with an equation which is named after him. It's used to help save the world from being destroyed by solar flares. So far so good.

He became tired of the glamour of academia and returned to the UK to concentrate on helping students come to terms with maths and show that not all mathematicians are boring nerds; some are exciting, relatively well-adjusted nerds.

Colin lives in Dorset with an espresso pot, several guitars and nothing to prove.

About the Author

Colin Beveridge holds a doctorate in mathematics from the University of St Andrews. Many books of maths problems contain plenty of problems and skimp on the explanations; happily this book is not in that category. The same author, Colin Beveridge, wrote Basic Maths For Dummies (UK Edition), which is a great book for gaining skills but has a flaw in that it doesn't contain problems to practice those skills.

This book is smaller in format than the usual Dummies books (the wide margins are dispensed with) and contains shorter explanations than the first book, but these are enough for most needs. For example, the bigger book spreads an explanation of number lines over three pages, this book does it in one.

Someone who is really maths phobic will benefit from using both books in tandem, as the first book does contain plenty of alternative illustrations and examples. For those who feel their maths skills just need a bit of brushing up, perhaps to pass a functional skills test, this is ideal.

The book is arranged into five sections. The first goes through the basics, the building blocks of maths. It shouldn't be skipped, but it can be skimmed, as it covers the use of terms (like indices and approximation) that need to be understood. The second section covers working with parts of the whole; percentages, fractions, decimals, and ratios.

A section on practical, real-life maths follows (numeracy) followed by a section on statistics and finally the well known Dummies series Part of Tens. Ten Ways To Check Your Work, and Ten Top Tips for Getting Things Right.

A very good guide for any adults wanting to brush up their skills, or to support courses at home or work, with plenty of practice.
Also it's a useful read for tutors, as they are presented with alternative methods of obtaining solutions and good advice on learning strategies to pass on to their students. Recommended.

As a parent with two ten year old girls I am constantly having to deal with homework queries in relation to maths problems that seem to me as though they were devised for Einstein not middle school children.

My usual response is to reply ‘I don’t do maths’ reading this book has helped me immensely and let me realize that anyone can ‘do maths’, the book is well written and covers topics from the basics of addition and subtraction including how to work out your change at the shop, to statistics, probability, graphs and data mining,

An excellent book that has helped me immensely. If you have every used one of the dummies books you will instantly recognize the format and layout. The book is easy to either work through or to did in and out of as you see fit, a great book, well recommended. It comes in a very handy size too(About A5)

This is a handy book to have around for helping you with some of the simple math problems, you will find loads of information and set practices on each part for you to have a try at, For some body like me who was always finding maths a difficult subject it never sat well with me,i wish i had a book like this around when i was learning as it explains things in simple terms.I would think that it could be handy when you have young children to help along the way as maths appears to be an every evolving subject which has changed since i and my children were at school.Worth considering to have around.

The book is clearly written and very easily understood. It would suit anyone who is of school age and learning the material for the first time, as well as a parent who needs to share the basics with their child in order to support their learning at home. Furthermore I would highly recommend this book to those who have to prove their numeracy skills at level 2 (grade C in GCSE) for an employment role.
If you expect to get anything above the basic I would advise that you take the title literally as it is the basics.
Highly recommended.

I am currently on chapter 5 of this book and finding it immensely helpful. I bought this to help me with revision for taking a numeracy test and after having a bad experience of maths all through school felt very panicked about taking up this subject again. Colin Beveridge presents each chapter clearly and moves you through at a gentle pace with lots of encouragement and breaks down formulas and processes in to managable chunks and dare I say even has made me start to enjoy numbers for the first time in my life. I wish my math's teachers could have been more like Colin Beveridge. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone having to take a numeracy test or just wanting to be more confident with their application of maths in every day life. Thank you Mr Beveridge for your fantatsic book which makes maths accessible to everyone!
