Product Description

Product Description

Freud's theories demonstrates why they are still indispensable to understanding ourselves and the way we behave.. In Basic Freud, noted psychologist Michael Kahn shows that even in the age of psychopharmaceuticals and cognitive therapy, Freud's major insights into the unconscious remain unsurpassed tools for understanding our behaviors, motivations, and emotions. Kahn presents key ideas such as the Oedipus complex, the repetition compulsion, guilt, anxiety, and defense mechanisms, along with recent research that has supported or expanded Freud's findings. Kahn also presents real case studies from his own work as a psychotherapist to show how Freudian thought has been instrumental in helping his clients discover who they are and escape from destructive patterns. Lay readers and professional psychotherapists alike will benefit from Kahn's fresh, informed, and unpretentious approach.

I wanted an introduction to Freud but I didn't want it too brief, and I wanted it to be understandable. I got all three with this book.
The author takes us through Freud's ideas, chapter by chapter, so there's one on guilt, one of the oepidus complex, one on grief and so on. He adapts Freud's ideas for the 21st century, demonstrating how they are still relevant, although occasionally in need of tweaking.
I wanted to learn something about myself by reading this book, and things about people too. I did, particularly about myself. I found myself averting my eyes from the pages to think, and managed to make links with things in my past and the way I am now.
I may well look more into Freud in the future, but this was an accessible and readable introduction.

I was studying Psycology at college as part of my Access Course and delveoped an interest in Freud and was curious to learn some book. Unable to find a book suitable at my local library and college library I purchased this. It gave a great understanding into the world of Freud and his theroies. A very good starting point for anyone keen to learn more about him.
