Book Description

30 Sep 2011
Drawing, the most basic of the visual arts, is often seen as a natural ability, but it can be learnt. Working from observation in pencil, pen or charcoal helps you to see clearly, increases your visual awareness and enhances your ability to design in two dimensions. The New English Art Club, an exhibiting society with a 125 year history, runs a school of drawing in which it tries to keep alive the tradition of working from life, which used to be taught in all art schools but is now almost extinct. Charles Williams Cert. RAS RWS NEAC, the current curator, brings together exercises, illustrations, demonstrations and, above all, the attitude to drawing of the NEAC Drawing School in one comprehensive book. Williams links nineteenth-century artists and thinkers like Walter Sickert and John Ruskin with contemporary writers like Betty Edwards in an attempt to show that to draw is to be a part of a great, living tradition that the contemporary world of photography and digital technology will never eclipse. Key Selling Points * NEAC imprimatur * Close photographed demos/process * 130+ black and white and colour illustrations * Clear design * Sketchbook sized, convenient, recognisable. * Tips, hints and examples from practising professional artists * Professional, 'manual'-style presentation

5.0 out of 5 stars If you only buy one drawing book... 24 Oct 2011
Format:Hardcover
I love this book! I've never read anything like it! Even if you 're not that interested in drawing, it's beautifully illustrated, with lovely drawings, often quirky and charming, and hardly any photographs, which shows that the author is both completely in command of the subject as well as articulate and funny - there are some hilarious anecdotes and very wise advice and encouragement for those of us that missed out on being taught how to draw properly.

This is really all you need in a book about drawing; it's not written like a school text book, or as if the reader were stupid, you never feel patronised, but you do feel confident that he absolutely knows what he's talking about. If you want a book on drawing that's unlike any other, buy this one!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Christmas Present 17 Nov 2011
Format:Hardcover
If you like to draw, or think you might, or are simply interested in other people's drawings, this book is for for you. It would make a perfect Christmas present for all those friends and relations who have ventured as far as art classes, or those with secret ambitions to put pencil to paper who haven't yet dared. Give them the impetus to try! Or just give yourself a treat.
