This is a great book - it starts off the complete beginner, on Bridge-like games, and works it's way up to comlete Bridge. It includes many examples on all of the aspects that it covers, and even gives the answers to it's exercises in the back of the book. By the end of the book, the beginner has turned into a competent player, good enough to play in a duplicate Bridge session. Whatsmore, the book is not thousands of pages long... it condenses all the information it contains into a short, manageable book, which in turn are split up even further to small readable chapters. The information contained within each chapters is well set out so that upon reading it you will be able to memorize 2 or 3 key points that are VERY useful when playing the game of bridge.
I started off by reading this book, and I found it very easy to understand.

If you want to learn or improve your bridge to a respectable level, this is the book for you. There are plenty of exercises to get to grips with the ways of bidding and playing. The explanations are sound too.
This book has got to be in your library of bridge books.

5.0 out of 5 stars Basic Bridge as Teaching Aid 8 July 2003
I have found this book excellent both as a self help and for teaching. As a new bridge teacher I use it for preparation & reference, the excercises are well thought out and are used both in the classroom and for homework. It is a book which is already well thumbed and will be increasingly so over the next few years.

This is well-written and thorough, as would be expected from this trio of experienced authors. Useful for beginners, but also for ensuring firm foundations for improvers and intermediates. There is a lot of detail, but the layout is clearer and less dense than in some of Klinger's other books.

Several bidding sequences are laid out in table format, which is a very effective way of showing all the options. As usual, only one way to play the system is described without any mention of other options - Acol is an unregulated system and has varied over the years. However, it represents pretty standard "Basic Acol". A significant omission (common in basic bridge books) is any advice to opener and responder on what to do if opponents overcall and take away your bidding space; there is one paragraph on what to do if they double.

Play techniques are a nice balance of theory, understanding and useful practical principles such as "second hand plays low", but also flag up some dangers in relying too heavily on the last-named rather than thinking through each hand on its merits. Five helpful "pre-bridge" games are described at the beginning (including what is now called Minibridge) which is a very good way of easing the beginner gently into the game. There are lots of good exercises, but no index.

This stands alongside the books by Mendelson, Bridge for Complete Beginners, and the EBU Really Easy Bidding (The really easy bridge series : Standard English foundation level) as good guides for the beginner. Your preference between them will depend on personal style, e.g. Mendelson is more chatty.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not for beginners 23 July 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Seems like I am a minority so far in not praising this book to the skies. My main criticism is the bewildering amount of detail especially regarding point boundaries and their appropriate bids. A beginner hasn't a hope of keeping this in his head. There are many other books on the market described as "basic" and which present the same subject matter in a considerably more digestible manner. If you are returning to bridge and were once an average/good player and you need a refresher - then this is the book for you. If you are new to bridge - check out Paul Mendelson books.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent guide to bridge 30 May 2014
By Shelagh
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I have been learning to play bridge for over a year and have found this book invaluable in consolidating what I have learned and in clarifying some points about which I was unsure. I like the format where explanations are interspersed with quizzes to check that you have understood.
As well as working through the book in chronological order, it is helpful to be able to dip into topics as individual units. I am sure I will be making use of this book for years to come.
