Product Description

Product Description

This is a fitness and training book for cyclists. Once the season starts, most cyclists save every spare moment for the road, racking up the mileage on long rides requiring consistently hard efforts. Thomas Chapple warns road cyclists that long and hard training can hurt a season more than it helps. While there is an appropriate time for tough training, smart preparation will teach the body how to better use its energy stores for improved performance. A cyclist's aerobic base is reliant on setting aside time before the season starts for training at a reduced volume and lower intensity. Slowing down will actually begin to build a stronger base, increasing the body's capacity for fitness and speed by establishing a stronger foundation for the season ahead. Fully illustrated with tables, figures and photographs, this is the missing link for cyclists who are looking to build a stronger aerobic engine, increase overall fitness, avoid common setbacks and ultimately achieve more speed.

I bought this partly because of its specialised nature; concentraing on winter base training, and secondly because it is "endorsed" by Joe Friel, he of the cyclists training bible that the majority of competitive cyclists will know about.

Whilst most ot the information is useful, it dosn't really give any great insight as to why or how base training works, in fact there are a nmber of annoying pseudo-scientific phrases that he uses, such as muscles "learning" to use fat, or worse confusing power with force or endurance. Power is simplay a measure of rate of energy used / output measured as watts or joules per second. The author uses it as an adjective to describe a feature of a cyclists performance, which in this modern day of the mariage of power meters and sport science simply doesnt cut the mustard.
I only managed to get trough 3/4 of the book, and then fell asleep. Peraps best summed up as a useful extra for your bookcase, rather than a go-to reference.

The definitive work on winter training - for most of us (unless you're a cross rider)
Gives chapter an verse on what to do and why with additional useful exercises on things such as peddalling technique.
A quality purchase - a book I refer back to upon a regular basis - and use to point out the benefits of what my students will achieve if the do the tasks correctly

Excellent 29 Aug 2008
Format:Paperback
For the lay person this book is great. You get an explanation of why you should Base train, what growth you can expect and how to step up to higher intensities as the season progresses.

I've used this book to improve my race performance. I'm now making dramatic improvements in my PB and have confidence that I will continue to improve. This after many years of not making improvements.

I haven't seen another book like it in terms of showing and explaining the value of low intensity, long-distance training and I can say it has transformed my approach to training.
