This review is from: Mother Tongue (Ciocarlie) (Audio CD)
as a keen admirer of Ligeti as well as Bartok, as well as 20th Century classical piano music (see my listmania lists etc) this collection of 4 Hungarian composers solo piano works was a treat to myself as keen to hear not only further works by these two composers but also finally some Kurtag and Eotvos in my collection.

at some point i will expand this review, but in essence if your a curious fan of how piano music has evolved post-romantic Rachmaninov,to Debussy to here. this is a fine collection of largely lesser known works very well played by Romanian Dana Ciocarlie with natural vivid sound - "la Langue Maternelle" is thoroughly recommended for those seeking arresting, unusual yet tonal works away from the extrovert and towards the terse, exploratory and introspective. for some this cd will be difficult , esoteric even if theyre not used to 20th C piano music - the semmingly facile works of Chopin et al do not apply here. the music here is decidely exploratoratory, sometimes percussive, sometimes deeply introspective. new means of expression are represented in the Hungarian composers works played here. start perhaps with the Bartok and Ligeti then work towards the Eotvos and Kuratag for the more gnomic and ultimately unique works .

total playing time just over 60 minutes also so plenty here to intrigue , surprise and enjoy.
