Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Another marvellous showcase for the Norwegian Chamber Orchestra, for its distinguished music director, and for that vivid Chandos sound--so warm, natural and full-bodied in these works for strings. The main musical challenge is the Bartók Divertimento, written in the atmosphere of impending world war in 1939, yet everywhere containing echoes of the interest in folk song that so occupied the composer in his earlier years. The familiar Bartók trademarks are there, but all in all for the first-timer this is a less daunting introduction to his music than many, especially given such a fabulously committed, riveting performance. No problems in approaching the winning melodies of the two Janácek works, but few in a "blind tasting" would guess he was the composer. These are early works from the 1870s when Janácek was under the spell of Dvorák, although they also owe their inspiration to baroque dance. There is little sign of the passionate, individual voice of the years to come, but the charm of these pieces belies the composer's own estimation that they were "worthless". And here and there (try the scherzo of the Suite) there are opportunities for virtuoso display--which the NCO eagerly seizes upon. --Andrew Green

5.0 out of 5 stars Impressive Bartok, 13 May 2011

This review is from: Bartok and Janacek (Audio CD)
Bartok's Divertimento is a major work and gets a wonderful performance here. The NCO under Iona Brown is a truly virtuoso band - and that brings one of the characteristics of this performance: the sheer exhuberance of well played string music. Of course, the work goes deeper than that (this is the Bartok of the quartets) and Brown has its measure. There are not shortage of performances of the Divertimento in the catalogue and this is as good as any of them.

The Janacek pieces are a strange coupling for they are the work of a very young Janacek and sound nothing like the Janacek we know. Indeed they are works of the late 19th century and it is hard to detect a distinctive voice in them. But both the Suite and Idyll are very attractive works with many memorable ideas - at least they are when they are this well played.

If you want a first rate Divertimento with an unusual coupling don't hesitate.
