Bartok's Divertimento is a major work and gets a wonderful performance here. The NCO under Iona Brown is a truly virtuoso band - and that brings one of the characteristics of this performance: the sheer exhuberance of well played string music. Of course, the work goes deeper than that (this is the Bartok of the quartets) and Brown has its measure. There are not shortage of performances of the Divertimento in the catalogue and this is as good as any of them.
The Janacek pieces are a strange coupling for they are the work of a very young Janacek and sound nothing like the Janacek we know. Indeed they are works of the late 19th century and it is hard to detect a distinctive voice in them. But both the Suite and Idyll are very attractive works with many memorable ideas - at least they are when they are this well played.
If you want a first rate Divertimento with an unusual coupling don't hesitate.
