About the Author

Jean Dufaux is a noted author who has created many series throughout his long career. Among them: "Murena," "Sang de Lune" and, more recently, "Lament of the Lost Moors." Sometimes called "Jean the Prolific," at ease with practically every style, his most famous heroine remains "Jessica Blandy." Jeremy is a young Belgian artist who began as a colourist for the series "Murena" and "Lament of the Lost Moors," both written by Dufaux, who, impressed by his work, chose to partner with him on "Barracuda."

Dufaux and Jeremy team up for what's started off as a great series beautifully illustrated. Graphic novel fans needed another pirate story after Cross-Gen's excellent El Cazador was halted prematurely. I can't wait for the next installments.

about kids.....not for kids 4 Nov. 2013

In 2005 Cinebooks was created with the idea of bringing the best of the Franco-Belgian comics to the UK and the USA.

Barracuda Volume one Slaves is the first volume in a remarkable new series of Graphic novels. It is a 56 page beautifully illustrated story of three children caught in the world of very realistic pirates.

Barracuda is the name of the pirate ship. Raffy is a bloodthirsty young boy raised to follow in his fathers(the captain of the Barracuda) footsteps.

The Pirates board a ship and find no treasure but three beautiful women who can be sold as slaves. A Spanish noble woman and her daughter Maria and the servant boy Emilo who they disguise as a girl.

The three are taken to an island and auctioned off all to different slave owners. While the story features three children it is surely not written for children. There is violence, nudity and abuse.

The story is very compelling reading with gripping action and heartbreak. The art by Belgian artist Jeremy is hauntingly beautiful with many intricate panels and details.

I have been critical in the past, because some other Cinebooks have actually altered the original art to do away with nudity. Cinebook's feeling was Americans could not deal with this and they needed to alter this to be able to sell to the American market. So it was a surprise to see no censorship in this book.

My only complainant then on this book then is the fact that Cinebook has shrunk down the art and put them in a trade format to make them the size of American comic books. I would gladly pay $20 to $30 to see them in a large over sized edition with Hard Covers that the source material was orginally printed in.

Barracuda has teeth, I can't wait for the two follow up volumes. Highly Recommended.

GOOD START 24 Nov. 2013

The sexual politics are murky and not quite plausible, but this is a good start to the series with ambiguous characters and plenty of promises of treachery and revelations in the future.
