5.0 out of 5 stars Evocative, 16 Feb 2009
By Robert Bailey (West Dorset, Uk) - See all my reviews
A delightfully unputdownable book aimed at more experienced Players and Game-Masters, this gazetteer vividly describes a ruined city and its surrounds that lie in the forgotten swamplands of a small region of North-Western Bretonia, where the River Grismerie - the name an apt combination of miserable and grim - flows along the border to Bordeleaux, and from there out to the Great Ocean, North of Estalia.

The tone is dark throughout, perfectly capturing a key theme of Warhammer - that of despair, and the region's history is mired by tragedies and poignancies (and earthy humour of course) which bring it to life in a way that few GMs will be unimpressed by.

The main thrust of the adventure is a man-hunt, and although this is demanding enough to drive much of the plot, there are never a shortage of inter-related side-quests and escapades for the Players to become deeply embroiled in, all gracefully aimed at achieving remarkably engrossing role-play.

Swashes will most certainly be well-buckled; there is a wealth of background material, character details and atmosphere for the GM to draw upon, enabling the straight-forward design of further campaigns once the main adventure has had its day - and that day is likely to stretch to weeks of uninterrupted and relentless game-time.

Towards the end of the adventure the Players will be bound to make some tough choices, any of which will result in them finding a greater depth of sympathy for their characters predicament, and all those NPCs who they engage with will stay long in the imagination afterwards.

There are perhaps a dozen or so recommendations to read "Knights of The Grail - A Guide to Bretonia" first, but which I haven't bought yet. As it is, I think Barony of the Damned stands well on its own, ill-informed as I may be.

A densely packed book, with oodles going for it in terms of imagination, style and content, (and barring the occasional appearance of the symbol "@" where numbers should be, and the use of the word "noisome" four times in the closing sections), this is an essential piece of the Warhammer Fantasy Role-Play arsenal that really must be at your gaming disposal, though this may not be for those of you more squeamish around snails!

Top Marks.

4.0 out of 5 stars Barony of the Damned: Bretonnian Adventure (Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay S.), 19 May 2006
By James Goodchild (Cambridge UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
One of the best campaign books released. The adventure is flexible to cope with PC's of varying ability, and has a multi-threaded, non-linear plot.
