Product Description

Product Description

Many people play roots music, but few modern musicians live those roots like Minnesota's Charlie Parr. Recording since the earliest days of the 21st century, Parr's heartfelt and plaintive original folk blues and traditional spirituals don't strive for authenticity: They are authentic. It's the music of a self-taught guitarist and banjo player who grew up without a TV but with his dad's recordings of America's musical founding fathers, including Charley Patton and Lightnin' Hopkins, Woody Guthrie and Leadbelly. With his long scraggly hair, father-time beard, thrift-store workingman's flannel and jeans, and emphatic, throaty voice, Parr looks and sounds like he would have fit right into Harry Smith's 'Anthology of American Folk Music.' Parr's forthcoming album, Barnswallow will be his eleventh studio release. Most of his recordings, including Roustabout (2008), Jubilee (2007), Rooster (2005), King Earl (2004), 1922 (2002) and Criminals and Sinners (2001) eschew typical studio settings. His inspiration is drawn from the alternately fertile and frozen soil of Minnesota. Parr grew up in the Hormel company city of Austin, Minnesota (population 25,000) where most of the world's favorite tinned meat, Spam, is still manufactured. And he hasn't moved far, drawing sustenance from the surprisingly large, thriving and mutually supportive music scene of Duluth.

I bought this after taking a chance on seeing Charlie Parr live ( having realised that it was his song behind the vodafone adverts ( 1922 ) that I enjoyed so much).

He played a shortish set ( less than an hour ) but was so alive in his playing, singing and between-song commentary that buying his CD was an easy choice.

I admit, I bought it from him at the gig : seemed like the least I could do to give him some direct profit, and even then the CD ( at 10 euros ) only just cost more than I paid for the show !

But the plus side was that I talked to him ( & his washboard player ) and shook hands too. He's a genuinely "nice guy", with a passion for his music.

The songs on this CD I heard live first, but the recorded versions are still lively and vibrant, and match the vigour and interpretation of his live performance. Its also a short CD ( time-wise about 40/45 minutes ) but the quality is superb, so much so that I have another on the way ( Cheap Wine, one of the few he performed live that were not on Barnswallow ).

Standout track for me is "True Friends" , plus "Groundhog Day Blues" [ love the line 'that mailman ain't no friend of mine at all' ], "Motorcycle Blues"....well, every damned one of them to be honest.

Buy it, you won't be disappointed, but take any chance to see him play live : he's the real thing.

Format: Audio CD
On his eleventh album, Barnswallow, Charlie Parr continues to delight with his impressive East Coast Blues style.
It's clear from the opening footstomper, 'Jimmy Bell', that Charlie lives for his music. This is one of two traditional tracks on the album, all others are Charlie's own work. He's a born storyteller and he tells his tales with imagery, satire and skill. There's the raw honesty of 'Badger', and lessons to learn in 'Henry Goes To The Bank' and provocative allegory in 'Jesus Is A Hobo'.
It's mostly about the music though - masterful finger-picking on his Resonator & 12 string guitars and fretless banjo is accompanied by precise and flawless percussion from Mikkel Beckmen, on washboard and various improvised goods. Dave Hundreiser provides harmonica, jaw-harp, and resonator mandolin. The three play together in a fluid and easy style and the fact the this is a live studio recording, completed in two takes, proves how accomplished they are as a unit. And there's no shortage of what Charlie is all about - Piedmont Blues...'My Wife', 'Groundhog Day' and the fast paced 'Motorcycle Blues' should please any fan of the genre.
Barnswallow, with its mix of authenticity, invention and realism, should tick all the boxes if you're already a fan. If Charlie Parr's a new name to you - make friends with Barnswallow, you won't regret it!
