Book Description

30 Dec 2000
The name of Edward Tasker is synonymous with the history of Barnsley. For nearly twenty years, the books containing collections of his photographic history of the town, have become progressively more respected as both historic records and collectors items. Now, in close cooperation with the members of the Tasker Trust and Barnsley Public Libraries Archive Department, Wharncliffe Books are delighted to present a revised and updated republishing of these sought after books. For the Millennium year, Wharncliffe Books are publishing an enlarged Volume 1, which will contain information and illustrations previously featured in the old Volumes 1, 3 and 4, plus the same views as they are today, with updated information regarding the changes of occupancy of all the buildings listed. The streets and roads included in this first volume are: Churchfield, Church Street, St Mary's Place, Market Hill, Peel Street, Cheapside and both sides of Sheffield Road.Wharncliffe Books are greatly indebted to the members of the Tasker Trust, in particular Mr Raymond Walker and the stafff of Barnsley Archives for assistance in the preparation of these books. These new editions of this much sought after publication already appear destined to become collectors items in their own right.

About the Author

Mr E G Tasker was born in Lincolnshire and served during the Second World War as a radiographer. After the war he opened a photographic dealers shop in New Street, Barnsley where he built up a large collection of prints and slides. In 1960, when changes in Barnsley were beginning to take shape, he began to record the buildings in the centre of town and also research who had occupied the properties during the last hundred years. In the 1970s the collection of over 1,000 photographs of Barnsley Streets past and present, plus the details of the occupants were reproduced in 9 volumes of Barnsley Streets . --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.
