3.0 out of 5 stars Barn Owls in Britain, 6 Aug 2009
By K. F. Betton "Keith Betton" (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
There can be few other birds that have attracted authors' interest as much as the Barn Owl, and a quick look along my bookshelves reveals no less than three other titles dedicated to the species - the world's most widely distributed land bird. The book lacks photographs but is illustrated instead by line drawings by Jeff Baker.

Jeff Martin's interest in Barn Owls began in the 1970s having regularly watched a pair on the Suffolk/Essex border. He then went on to organise a survey of the species in Suffolk and having become fascinated by them he started to write this book. This gestation period of nearly two decades explains why a foreword is included by the late Eric Hosking, who, through his photographs, probably did more to reveal Barn Owls to a general audience than any other person.

A general review of the species' distribution and classification is followed by a chapter on its physical attributes. A range of material has been researched to give an overview of diet, feeding techniques, roosting, nesting, movements and longevity, and much of this material is also available in previously published titles. However about half of the book focuses on recent local trends from around the country and tries to assess the reasons why in many places in Britain the Barn Owl has declined in the last fifty years.

Understandably the author draws greatly from his own experience in Suffolk but he has drawn together conclusions from around the country and from Europe. While Barn Owls are thought to have a stable population in Britain they are declining across much of Europe. Productivity in Britain has generally improved since the 1950s having probably been affected by organochlorine pesticides. Clutch sizes have increased, nest failure rates have fallen and the most recent national census from 1995-1997 estimated the entire UK population to be around 4000 breeding pairs.

This book is written in an easy style and is a handy distillation of information from a wide range of sources. It includes the previously unpublished accounts from Frank Phillips who, in the 1930s, erected a hide to allow him to observe a Barn Owl nest in the Itchen Valley in Hampshire.
