Want to know:-

* how a war started when a Brit insisted on sitting on a stool?
* who wore a necklace made of 50 human skulls?
* why a Brit soldier used his own coffin as a wardrobe?

Read on for foul facts about savage slavers, rotten rebels and nasty natives, go for victory with Queen Victoria's quick eastern quiz, and meet some of the most horrid heroes of the British Empire face to face.
History has never been so horrible!'

A witty, colourful cover opens to 127 pages, split over chapters:

1. Terrible timeline
2. Early Empire
3. Savage slavers
4. Incredible India
5. Empress's quick eastern quiz
6. Dreadful down under
7. Awful for animals
8. Gruesome games and sick sports
9. Heroes of the British Empire
10. Nasty natives

with an introduction and an epilogue.

Written with the typical Deary humour, and illustrations from Martin Brown throughout.

Nobody likes to hear that they were once the bad guys...especially after they lost their Empire....Terry's book is exactly what it says on the cover...history with the horrid bits left in...my boy loves them and so do I.

This book is an excellent read for children as it is very amusing and has many disgusting stories in it. It is also a very truthful book, telling the stories of the British and native sides.

However while this book is amusing and gruesome it also lacks description because it does not mention a word about the any of the navys, it does not mention anything about Britain's rivaling empires and does not tell you the date of the stories that are in it.

But I would not imagine a child reader being put off by this because it is an intresting, easy book to read it also has a quiz at the end to see if you got the things into your head.

So because this book is for children and they will not care much about the lack of information, I am going to rate it 4 stars.
