Product Description

“Faultless” - Football365

As EURO 2000 approached, attention once again focused on the potential threat posed by the activities of football hooligans. Not just those from England, but also from Holland, Belgium, Germany,Italy, France and even Turkey.

Yet as this last year has proven, whilst the hooligans in other nations cause as much, if not more, trouble than their English counterparts, it is the activities of the fans from this country which always seems to attract the greatest scrutiny. And with good reason.

For hooliganism is on the rise in England again.

And from amongst their number has emerged a new breed of thug, more dangerous and cunning than their predecessors ever were. Hooligans who have adopted the style and mannerisms of the old school casuals whilst embracing the technology of the mobile phone, the pager and more importantly, the Internet. How has it come to this? And why? More importantly, how can we stop them?

Using the hard-edged, in-your-face style of his previous books, Dougie Brimson explores every aspect of the hooligan issue and lays it bare. From the birth of the problem in the fourteenth century to the explosion of organised violence via the world wide web, Barmy Army examines the people, the causes, the methods and the history of this frightening, yet fascinating problem.

More About the Author

Having written 15 books and a multi award winning feature film in under 16 years, former serviceman Dougie Brimson has emerged as one the UK's most prolific writers.

After 18 years service with the Royal Air Force -including both the Falklands and Gulf War 1- the ex-Sergeant engineer's literary career began in 1996 when he co-wrote a book based on his experiences as a soccer casual entitled Everywhere We Go.

This groundbreaking work examined the culture of soccer fandom from the inside and has become essential reading for anyone with an interest in the game and its supporters. A further 13 books have followed and their success has established the author as one of the worlds leading authorities on the issues of both the game and lad culture. His latest book, Wings of a Sparrow, was released in December 2012.

The next 12 months will see the addition of at least two new ebooks onto the Brimson portfolio.

The first, will be the third book in the best-selling 'The Crew/Top Dog' trilogy followed by the much anticipated sequel to Billy's Log.

Away from the literary world, Dougie is also an accomplished screenwriter having penned the critically acclaimed short movie IT'S A CASUAL LIFE and the full length feature, GREEN STREET HOOLIGANS starring Elijah Wood. Following its release in September 2005, the film won numerous awards including:

Narrative Jury Prize - SXSW Film Festival
Narrative Feature Audience - SXSW Film Festival
Best of Festival - Malibu Film Festival
Jury Award (feature) - Malibu Film Festival
Official Selection - Tribeca Film Festival

After a successful worldwide cinema release, the movie went on to sell over 80,000 DVD units during its first week on sale in the UK alone.

TV and radio credits include Sky News, BBC News, BBC News24, NBC, CBN, ESPN, Talk Radio and Radio 5 Live whilst Dougie has also produced and presented two motorsport series for Granada Television as well as working as a presenter for Bravo TV. In 2007, he also produced a motorsport series for Channel 5 in the UK covering the sport of BrisCA Formula One Stock Car racing.

Dougie is currently working on a variety of new movie projects including the forthcoming Brit-zombie flick Killerweed (currently in pre-production), Mister One Hundred (a biography of Welsh darts legend Leighton Rees), Wings of a Sparrow (a football based comedy), Soldier, Soldier (based around the war in Afghanistan) and an adaptation of his own novel, Top Dog, which is due to begin filming in Summer 2013.

5.0 out of 5 stars Yet another top read by Brimmo. 14 Feb 2000
By A Customer
After all the negative hype surrounding this book, I expected it to be a bit duff but it turned out to be a great read. Two long and brilliantly researched chapters about the history of the scene dominate the first half and the remainder is taken up with usual opinionated but accurate attacks on the police, the media and the game.
It's inevitable that some people will dismiss this book as a rehash (and in truth there is a lot that's been covered before but the book is actually better for that) but there's actually a lot that hasn't been covered before and which brought back a lot of memories (remember taxing?). And for those who know the scene, a glance at the credits shows some interesting names.

Another brilliant read from the Brimson stable. If you want to know about football hooliganism but don't want any of the "I woz there" type stuff, this book is a must.

3.0 out of 5 stars Bit dated now. 18 May 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I really enjoyed 'The Crew' AND 'Top Dog', great 'page turning' reads but this was a bit behind the times I found. It deals with stuff up to 2003 on the whole and I got a bit bored. But note that I am not nor have ever been a football fan in any size shape or form.

5.0 out of 5 stars A blinding read 13 May 2000
By A Customer
With more hooligan books hitting the shelves than ever, it's always good to see a new Brimson book. Because unlike most of the others, they take a critical overview of the situation rather than go down the 'we did them and never got done' route.
This one is probably the strongest they have written so far and certainly, by the end, it even had me questioning my own role in the spread of hooliganism. And I'm no lad, just a normal football fan. But one does wonder why the authorites don't take heed to his warnings. After all, he's been proven right almost every single time.
A must read.
