Review

"Barking! has Grace Smith involved with mild-mannered accountant Stuart Roberts, who believes he is a reincarnated murderer guilty of killing his father five decades earlier. In the course of her investigation of Stuart's allegation, Grace encounters a pampered bulldog who turns into a media star, an aging rock singer with a string of disgruntled wives, a manipulative hypnotist bent on revenge, an egotistical cop who will talk but only for a price Grace is unwilling to pay, and a coked-up killer with an elaborate arsenal of guns and knives. Great fun and good laughs--sure to appeal to those who like their heroines cheeky, charming, and crazy."

The fourth of Liz Evans' Grace Smith books sees the sloppy PI set a curious puzzle when she brains a passing accountant with a large dog's bone.
The accountant wants her to investigate an old crime which may not even have been committed. In regression sessions under hypnosis, he describes killing people. Despite Grace's unwillingness to become involved, her interest is piqued (and the expenses cheques are large). Then she discovers the accountant is not exactly who he claims to be.
The plot contains a mass of relationships such as you might find in a small town, a lot of people with dodgy histories, some wonderfully funny moments - the reason why the dog she is looking after dives into a swimming pool is one - and a genuine twist in the tail that took at least one reader by surprise.
Anyone who has ever lived in a British seaside resort out of season knows the world Grace inhabits. It's why I don't live in one anymore.

Liz Evans is an excellent writer and her books are very funny. I love the Grace Smith series and Barking is one of the best. Its nice to have a pragmatic heroine who is neither perfect nor tortured with angst, but instead tries to make the best of things whilst ending up in frequently undignified situations. Fresh, funny and unpredictable. More please.

I really enjoyed this, though in my opinion the high point of the series so far has been book 3: 'Don't mess with mrs in-between', in which Grace acted more like a real detective. The rest of the time she tends to bumble along, solving mysteries more by luck than skill, hence comparisons with Janet Evanovich. The series does have a lot going for it; it's funny, the mysteries are new ones, not just your standard whodunnit, it's long enough to be a book you can get stuck into, and the supporting cast is good. My only problem is that occasionally the reader wants to slap Grace and tell her to grow up and think a bit more (I have the same problem with Janet Evanovich). It's only a minor problem, but it is hard to have sympathy with a scrounger heroine who can't seem to get her head around the basic proposition that people have to work for a living, and sometimes that means doing more than the bare minimum you can get away with. Still, I'm going to keep going with this, and I'm looking forward to the new one - we'll see how the series develops.
