4.0 out of 5 stars Barely a Bride 19 Feb 2004
Format:Mass Market Paperback
I came across this author entirely by accident but I'm very glad I did. Barely a Bride ranks high with books by Stephanie Laurens for passion and Julia Quinn for fun and laughter.
The theme running the length of the book is the quandary Griffin finds himself in as a member of the Free Fellows League when he makes a hurried marrriage to the lovely Alyssa before he goes off to war. Clause 5 in the League charter states that: you shall never be encumbered by the sentiment known as love.
But Alyssa, unbeknownst to Griff is well aware of the secret league and as a true heroine, spirited, warm hearted and compassionate proves irresistably triumphant.
The 'game of seduction' as played in the carriage taking them to their new home is inspired.
This book is a true regency romp and just the thing to cosy up to on a cold winters night - or to chill out with on a hot sunny beach.
Well done Rebecca I can't wait for the second in the series.

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting. 15 July 2004
By A Customer
Format:Mass Market Paperback
The first in the 'free fellows league' series.
Both Lady Alyssa and Grifffin Viscount Abernathy want independence but must marry. So they end up getting married to each other (the scene where he asks her dad for her hand is hilarious) and the shocking thing is they get married in a church with no special license (now is that rare in a regency or what!). The church service is very american but after a short gripe is easy to get over. From the marriage she wants a garden and he gets to join the cavelry. Eventually they want each other but the 'free fellows league' will not let him love her!

3.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining enough 16 Jun 2011
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Barely a Bride is a fun read for anyone who enjoys this genre. It doesn't offer anything out of the ordinary, but the author writes interesting, engaging characters.

A warning, though, for anyone who is a stickler for period detail. If you like things accurate this book might leave you wincing in places. A little research with old maps and engravings of houses during the Regency would have made a difference.
