Dance classics on a jazz-tip., 6 Mar 2006
Take a host of dance classics from the last 15 years and give them a total new re-working in a jazz-style.The dance classics go back to the early 90's featuring Crystal Water's-Gypsy Woman and Sub Sub's-Aint no love, aint no use and add some more recent dance tracks like Xpress 2's-Lazy and Tim Deluxe's-It just won't do. I expected the album to feature just one style of jazz (and if you dont even like jazz - dont let the jazz term put you off!) but there are essence of jazz throughout each track with some being really laid-back and chillout with others being a much more beefier affair with some great beats and music. Throughout this album Sam Obernik provides the vocals where you might recognise her when she colalborated with Tim Deluxe on It Just Wont Do - which is included here as one of the stand-out tracks of the album. Another favourite of mine is the almost Portishead-esque version of Underworld's-Born Slippy. This version provoked a totally different feeling and had me laughing when Sam started singing, "lager, lager, lager," over the new mellow backing! Another jazz varient was the almost chill-out reworking of the Mousse T classic-Horny. They have really sleazed up this version and is another venture around the jazz genre. If you love your dance classics - then this album needs to be in your collection - even if you don't like jazz let this album introduce you to the delights of it and give it a chance. My favourite album of 2006 so far! Well recommended!
