Unlike many other books available on self-improvement this one is funny, instantly accessible and it works! The short insights and exercises help you focus your energies and let your spirit flow. Should you not believe in such nonsense, buy it and try it, this book really does help me to survive and thrive in life; Since reading and following some of the advice in this book, I can honestly say my life has become more enjoyable, and it's not often you get that from a book. Considering the sheer amount of patronising self-help books out there, it's good to know that there are books - and authors - like this who can make fun of themselves while at heart taking the subject of TRUE self-improvement extremely seriously.
Like everyone else says, you don't have to believe the far-out philosophies, but a lot of the mental exercises will have almost immediate benefits. And speaking as someone who has been referring to this book - and the author's newspaper column - for almost a year, the life improvements that can result from a new approach are ongoing.
Get hold of the book, and learn to let go of what's holding you back.

Life seems to be a rollercoaster ride of emotions, one day your experiencing unlimited joy, ecstacy and fulfilment. The next day we can be experiencing anger, depression, regret and suddenly we dont see the point. What the barefoot doctor does in his book is give us a crash course in maintaining a spiritual and mental balance during the inneviatable peaks and downturns in our daily life. The essential thing is to be in touch with whats important in the present moment not what has happened or will happen ie are we alive are we breathing properly. From mastering the basic techniques set out in this book we find we just get on better with the world and you wont be taken for a ride because your always going to be in control.Essential reading whatever your current position in life.

This is an excellent book that everyone should read. Some (non-urban warrior types) may be put off by the talk of chi and centering and suchlike, but I can't think of anyone who wouldn't get something out of this handbook. I've lost count of the number of copies I've bought as presents (no doubt helping Mr. Russell (aka the Barefoot Doctor) get together enough cash to buy some shoes!)
The day I finished this book I felt about 10 foot tall and ready to take on the world (or at least help the world on it's merry way).
For some this will be a life changer, for others it could contain some useful (and amusing) advice on how to make life a little easier. Either way, an essential purchase. Enjoy...

Bringing Taoism within easy reach of the practitioner, BD demonstrates some powerful exercises for transformation. Practices usually shrouded in mystery and esotericism - we are taught the basics of the Microcosmic Orbit and other effective grounding / circulating techniques. The style is practical and humorous, the effect to make the reader laugh and be more intuitive of their own innate abilities. This is not an intellectual thesis on Taoism nor does it ramble into philosophy. Rather, BD recognises a key problem with the world is a current lack of grounding (being-ness) as a product of over-intellection. In a world of confusion regarding the inner science, BD gives you the essential tools and mindset to get started on your own and be your own guide. If the practices here are followed wholeheartedly (and within the sequel (RUW)), you have the essence of Taoist esoteric knowledge in a package built for the 21st century condition. The 4* is only because he made reference to 'not getting involved with orthodox medicine' when discussing healing (always wise to see a GP first).

A book about Taoism is always going to be a challenge to review but suffice to say it WILL change your life for the better. Just open your mind and cruise through the easy to read and understand chapters and practice the very simple exercises. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to open their hearts and minds to a new way of moving through their daily lives. At the end of the book you will think clearer, love stronger and see the world around them in a new and more positive way.
I gave my copy to a friend so I've just ordered another one.
