Not just anyone can be a knight, and this spell-binding collection of action- packed stories from around the world will show you why. From the familiar court of King Arthur to the distant realm of Prince Vladimir of Kiev, this enticing collection reveals that being a good knight is harder than it may seem. Not only are a brave heart and a strong arm required, but it is also necessary to know your own weaknesses, learn to cooperate with others and even, at times, have a good sense of humour! Giovanni Manna brings his warm, colourful characters to these adventurous tales that are sure to delight young would-be knights across the land.

More About the Author

Hi. I'm John Matthews. I've written nearly a 100 books over the last 30 years or so. Books about many things. Pirates, King Arthur and the Grail Quest, Faeries, Robin Hood, and many more. I love folklore, history and film and I recently began writing for movies and TV, creating documentaries, TV scripts and motion pictures. I write in collaboration with many of my dearest friends, including Wil Kinghan, Ari Berk, and David Franzoni, and with some of the finest artists in the world, including Brian Froud, Charles Vess and Alan Lee. I have also written many books with my partner Caitlin Matthews, with whom I sometimes think I share a brain, and who knows what I'm thinking before I think it. I'm also beginning to collaborate with our son, the actor Emrys Matthews, with whom we wrote the wonderful Teen Oracle. I recently began to write books for younger readers, including graphic novels and the fabulous StoryWorld series. Writing so many books has always been hard work and it continues to be so, but I love the act of creation and cannot imagine ever doing anything else. I'm greatful to all the countless people who have read my books, especially those who made my book on Pirates a New York Times best seller in 2006. There are many more books to come, so I hope you'll keep reading, and keep pestering your booksellers to stock them!

5.0 out of 5 stars enthralled 3 Nov 2007
By Ian
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Since being given this book two months ago my 5year old twins can't get enough, they love the stories and the beautiful way each one is illustrated and I get bombarded with questions about how and why for days afterwards. Daddy missed reading two of the chapters the first time round, as he was working late. My son suggested it was only fair that we read the wholebook again so Daddy wouldn't miss out! They will treasure this for years, especially when they later when they can read it for themselves.
If the art of story telling and bedtime stories is one you wish to enjoy in your family then I doubt you will regret adding this to your bookshelves, and I hope you enjoy it as much as we are doing.

Fancy a brave adventure filled with knights and chivalry? The Middle Ages might be over, but John Matthew's captivating tales might make you think otherwise. Coupled with actor Anthony Head's magnificent storytelling, and Giovanni Manna's delightful illustrations, these seven stories come alive! Children and adults alike will love to revisit this CD and paperback collection time and time again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful story with fabulous narration 29 Aug 2010
By M - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
I bought this book for my knight-obsessed daughter and we both fell in love with it. The stories are powerful for children and adults alike. As an adult, I think of them often. Also, in between and around the knight tales is a story about the children listening to the tales -- these are young boys in training to be knights. This story-around-the-tales is really endearing and wonderful. The storyteller rewards the boys with these tales. The narrator is such a pleasure to listen to. His voice is absolutely perfect. I highly recommend this as a book to read to children, as a CD to listen to with children, or as a CD to play in the car or in a classroom. I have given this book and CD set several times as a gift, too. Outstanding!!

This book completely captivated my 5 year old son. We both loved the stories of adventure, bravery, resourcefulness and honor. We found it at the library but plan to add it to our own collection soon. This would also make a great gift.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Knight Stories from around the World 28 Feb 2012

First of all, that review "From School Library Journal" has nothing to do with this book - I don't know what book it refers to, but it's irrelevant here. We all love the Barefoot Books - great way to expose your children to stories from a variety of cultures. The illustrations are lovely, and it is absolutely awesome to have a CD to go along with it. My boys love listening to all the knight adventures - and so do I. I highly recommend this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Courtly behavior through global tales 29 Aug 2011
By M. Heiss - Published on Amazon.com
Wow! My sons have loved this book. 7 knightly tales retold, in the context of a castle's Master Armorer teaching and instructing the young pages. Illustrations that remind me of Tomie dePaola's style -- cheerful, colorful, and stylized. This is fun to read out loud, it is a nice change of pace from fairy tales. It's really fun to get your kids to tell YOU these stories, espcially the trickster tales.

The stories are:

The Knight of the Kitchen (UK)
The Knight of the Swan (Germany)
The Three Journeys of Ilya Murom (Russia)
Perronik the Fool (Brittany)
The Tale of Gushtap (Persia)
Yogodayu and the Army of Bees (Japan)
Sir Cliges and the Cherry Tree (France)
