Review

Budding geographers will relish World Atlas by Nick Crane and David Dean, whose cheerful illustrations and infectious enthusiasm for our miraculous planet is underscored by lift-the-flap facts about countries' history, industry and ecology. --The Times

One of the most appealing of this year s books is non-fiction; the Barefoot Books World Atlas by Nick Crane (illustrated by David Dean, £14.99), which is full of fascinating, slightly alternative details...will make your children yearn for foreign climes, occupy them on the way there, and give them an inkling about what to do when they arrive. --Telegraph

Product Description

Embark on a mind-expanding journey across the planet. Your guide is earth enthusiast and TV presenter Nick Crane. Your map-maker is artist David Dean. Divided by geographical region, the Barefoot Books World Atlas looks at the way in which communities and cultures across the world have been shaped by their natural environment, and at the ideas and initiatives which are shaping the future. An atlas for the twenty-first century, it shows how all parts of the planet are interconnected and looks at the challenges which face us all in creating a sustainable future. Introduction includes the story of the solar system and the history of map-making. Maps of regions and oceans bring faraway places to life, with illustrated geographical and architectural features, people plants and wildlife, from oil fields to Buddhist monks to the Amazon Rainforest. Fold-out booklets reveal fascinating facts about each region. Shortlisted for the 2012 Junior Design Awards.

Bought this for my nearly 5-year-old son for Xmas after seeing the author discuss it on TV. It is a lovely book, with just enough information to keep a child's attention. The illustrations are amazing, lots to look at and discuss. My son loves factual books and this is right up his street. I hope to nurture the adventurer in him!

There are some factual errors in this book and that makes it difficult to rate highly when it is aimed at children and their education

Book purchased for a gift for a child, but I was convinced if Nick Crane had anything to do with it then it must be a good one. The sections are split into Oceans and Continents, with just enough writing to keep a reader interested, but the illustrations and labelling are brilliant for fast reference. I even bought another to just have around the house and my youngest child is now 14! Even I enjoy looking at it.
