Product Description

Review

'A wide range of unusual tales...seven in all, including the terrible Chenoo from Native America, an Aboriginal tale from Australia, and the Abominable Snowman from Nepal. As the whole of each spread is illustrated, it is a colourful volume, with plenty of detail to chase round the pages in Sophie Fatus' quirky artwork' - The Bookseller --The Bookseller. This pleasing collection of monster stories is inspired by folk tales from all over the world. The Feathered Ogre is a particular highlight, credited as being sourced from a 1956 collection of Italian folktales written by Italo Calvino. In it, a king lies dying, unhappy in the knowledge that only a magic feather from the back of an ogre who regularly terrorises the kingdom can save him. It takes an ingenious trick from Pirolo, the weediest of the king's gardeners, to foil the ogre and save the day. Fran Parnell's re-tellings are particularly effective and Fatus' total colour-explosion illustrations are just the right accompaniment' - Ink --Ink

About the Author

Fran Parnell travelled a great deal when she was young, spending her childhood in Singapore, Oman and Holmfirth. She has also spent nine months living in South America. She graduated from Cambridge with a degree in Anglo-Saxon, Norse and Celtic and now works as a legal editor. In her spare time, Fran likes to cycle, and has a keen interest in books, archaeology, history, shorthand and writing. Sophie Fatus is a full-time illustrator and sculptress whose bright and distinctive illustrations have brought her numerous commissions and international critical acclaim. 'I take much inspiration from animals that I love, and I want to give homage to their very strong dignity through my work. I'd like my work to be a peaceful message of solidarity and support, that could help children remember to love and respect each other.' Sophie was born and educated in France and now lives in Florence, Italy.

The Barefoot Book of Monsters 25 Oct. 2007
By susan unger - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover
We borrowed this book from our library, and simply had to own it! The storys are delightful to read aloud, and the illustrations are so delicious. I'm a huge fan of many of the Barefoot Books, and this is one of my favorites. The stories all have a light yet appropriate message, too... not too scary... more of a silly scary. They're not your typical 'monster' stories my any means, and each of the stories is from a different part of the world.

satisfying read aloud book 23 Aug. 2009

We first found this book in the library and after returning it, I decided we needed to purchase it for our home library. The bold, bright pictures are a wonderful addition to the tales from around the world. The stories are scary enough to engage an active 6 yr. old boy, but not so scary as to result in nightmares. This is a very fun book to read aloud.
