Book Description

20 Sep 2011 Novel of Sherlock Holmes
Barefoot on Baker Street is set in late Victorian London where a life of crime is the only way to escape poverty and servitude for one bright young workhouse orphan. The narrative follows Red on her incredible life-journey as it twists and turns through poverty, riches, infatuation, loss and love. A dramatic escape from the workhouse at thirteen propels Red into a world of slum housing, street gangs, prostitution and petty crime as the rapidly expanding city groans under the weight of the industrial revolution. A chance meeting with the mysterious and eccentric Sherlock Holmes prompts an infatuation which cuts through her street-wise bravado. Red's blossoming criminal career also brings her to the attention of Professor James Moriarty. An autistic savant riddled with obsessive compulsions, Moriarty is a dangerous criminal who draws Red into his life and onto a collision course with Holmes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gripping 27 Sep 2011
Format:Paperback
When I first started this book, I wasn't sure whether I would enjoy it as Sherlock Holmes is not top of my wish list. However, the central character, Red, is a force to be reckoned with and her character evolves dramatically throughout the story. It gets better and better as the book progresses, with a truly authentic feel, and quite soon reaches a point where putting it down isn't an option. There are twists in abundance and it is evident that the author knows her subject and has spent a lot of time on research. I would certainly recommend this book and look forward to more in the future.

5.0 out of 5 stars Spellbinding !! 26 Sep 2011
Format:Paperback
I absolutely love this book!! I am not a great Sherlock Holmes fan but you do not have to be to read this. It is addictive. From the minute I started reading I wanted to find out how the story would develop and couldn't put it down. The central character Red has had a very tough life, enduring violent acts at the hands of others, she therefore soon learns to protect herself and those she loves. She is tough, yet caring, feisty yet endearing, no wonder even the great Sherlock falls for this enticing creature. She wants to be loved and has a great capacity to love and she will do everything it takes to protect and care for her friends. A well researched and inspiring read for anyone.

To me the sign of a good book is feeling sad when I come to the end and having turned the last page I genuinely felt upset that I was saying goodbye to such a wonderful set of characters.

Needless to say I absolutely loved this novel.

I felt so intensely drawn into Victorian London, the central character is beautifully put together, as are they all, and I loved the fact that she was far from perfect, who of us are, the reader truly gets to understand and empathise with her and becomes desperate to know how her life, and therefore the book, will develop. The plot twists and turns keeping the reader on the edge of their seat, I just could not put it down. As a Holmes fan I found the interweaving of some of his best stories very intriguing and I would highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys a good mystery, crime or romantic novel, it ticks every box.
