Product Description

Synopsis
L.Ron Hubbard published his "Dianetics - the Modern Science of Mental Health" in 1950. Shortly afterwards he founded the Church of Scientology, a religion which could, he claimed, cure 70 per cent of illnesses. Hubbard quickly became a multi-millionaire but his methods, particularly his alleged use of brainwashing, led to investigations in and exile from Britain, Australia and the USA. The history of Hubbard's early years has always been shrouded in mystery, and for the last few years of his life Hubbard was said to have become a Howard Hughes-like recluse.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Incredible Story, 9 Nov 2003
By R. P. Sedgwick "Grim Rob" (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I first read this book shortly after it was published in the late 80's, and thought it as an absolute classic at the time. I have recently re-read it fifteen or so years on and am still of the same opinion!

What Hubbard managed to get away with is truly remarkable, and he has to go down as perhaps the greatest con-man ever! Without doubt he was also an incredibly talented individual suffering from a grave mental illness which impinged enormously upon all those who came under his spell.

The book is stunningly well researched, and the author seems to have access to an incredible amount of both written and oral material covering the whole of Hubbard's life.

The overall picture is one of total and utter deception by Hubbard carried out through decades of absolute chaos, paranoia and hysteria. My only slight criticism is that the author's thinly-disguised contempt for his subject occasionally boils to the surface and the book strays from being a biography to a character assassination.
