The sheer volume of information here makes it the perfect guide for fledgling expats and visitors alike. Metro and train maps are clear and in colour (unlike in some other guides) and the city walks are well researched and accurately illustrated in map form so there's no awkward cross-referencing. Actually it would be great if they had the space to mark every bar and restaurant on the maps too. Speaking of which, the selection includes obscure local favourites but doesn't turn up its nose at the classic tourist favourites like Els 4 Gats or Cafá Opera either. I cannot say the same of Lonely Planet which calmly sends readers off to the same overpriced and unscrupulous tourist traps (eg. El Rey de la Gamba) as it did four editions ago.
All in all, a treat to read, even if you're still at the planning stage.

I had a copy of this guide during the two years I lived in Bcn and it proved to be invaluable!! I used it constantly during the first few months; not just to find my way round and learn about all the top sights, but also because it covers what you might need to do if you are moving there more permanently... It's a wealth of information!
Many of the places it recommends (restaurants, bars, clubs, etc) were often places that my Catalan friends went to anyway so I can assure you that Time Out doesn't always send you off to the main 'tourist' spots to be surrounded by other foreigners! However, the Bcn scene is always changing (every couple of months) so it is hard to always be up to date... even if you live there... so a guide book isn't going to be right all the time!
I like Time Out guides as they don't just give you the info you need to enjoy life at your destination as a local person would, but they are also stylish and easy to use.
I have used Time Out guides on all my urban travels and have never been disappointed. They are excellent! I've already got the Time Out guide to my next destination: San Francisco...
I have just read this book in preparation for a future visit to the city. It has certainly given me an excellent insight before I travel. The section on the history and politics of Barcelona and Catalonia make it almost worth buying this book alone for! As a vegetarian I appreciated the fact that veggie restaurants were listed separately for each section of town. There's a great selection of maps at the back detailing the different areas of Barcelona and also the surrounding regions of Spain/Europe. There didn't seem to be anything missing from this travel guide and the only reason I haven't given it 5 stars is because I have yet to visit the city!
