I read a few reviews on here before my week long trip to BCN with my girlfriend on the 8th Aug 09. Our agenda was to see some sights/culture, eat out in some nice restaurants and spend some time on the beach to get a bit of a tan. The book is split into sections:
Top 10 sights to see in BCN (with a detailed breakdown of each feature)
Then the top 10 buildings, squares (placa), churches, museums, cafes, restaurants, night spots, gay hang-outs, shopping areas, markets, city views, parks and beaches, walks and bike rides, activities, kids attractions, festivals, and arts and music venues.
Then broken down by each area ("around town") in BCN are the top 10 local sights, shops, clubs, cafes, bars and restaurants, including beyond BCN.
Then you have a "streetsmart" section which gives you all sorts of useful tips on getting around, getting to/from the airport, tours and trips, safety, money and banking, shopping and accommodation etc.
Finally you have the maps (Metro underground, zoomed out overall map, and zoomed in Barri Gotic area), within the book (including one you can remove and keep on your person) which were very useful for finding little places which are not actually in the book. The size of the book was great as if you have some decent sized pockets (like the side ones in a pair of long shorts) you can take this book with you everywhere and as a result hopefully never get lost!).
The one aspect of the book that I found a little light, was the restaurant reviews, it was great that there were lots of cafes, bars and restaurants named and mentioned, however the amount of information on each restaurant was a little lacking (although to be fair there was info on many places along with a rough price guide). We had the lonely planet guide to Barcelona with us aswell, and together with that they worked well as it had more comprehensive information on places to eat. Also, we found it just as good to simply go for a wander about as there are places not in the book which were really nice, and whilst I appreciate they cannot fit in all the places in BCN its something worth knowing.
Overall I'd say its a fantastic book for people looking for 3 to 4 day breaks, but if you are a specific food lover you might want to pick up another book which would nicely complement this one, which has a more comprehensive guide to the many, many eateries on offer.
Enjoy BCN!
