Mattel's latest gender-reversed classic in the "Barbie" animated series begins on a farm in Gascony where Corinne, daughter of the famous D'Artagnan, is practicing her swordfighting moves. (Her idea of swordfighting appears to owe more to the "Zorro" films than anything you would actually expect to find in 17th century France, but never mind.)

Corinne's life's ambition is to follow in her father's footsteps by becoming a royal musketeer. When she turns 17 she goes to Paris to enlist, carrying like D'Artagnan before her, a letter of introduction to Monsieur de Treville, Captian of the King's musketeers.

Unfortunately for Corinne, the 17th century French authorities are not ready for the idea of a lady musketeer (this reluctance being probably the most plausible part of the film.) So instead she has to accept a job as a maid at the palace.

Just as D'Artagnan fell foul of "the three musketeers" on his first day in Paris and agreed to fight duels with each of them, Corinne has unfortunate meetings with three other girls while attempting to rescue her pet cat from an unpleasant dog belonging to the film's villain, and then finds that they are her new work colleagues.

Despite this unfortunate start, Corinne becomes friends with her new colleagues and it turns out that all four share an ambition to be royal musketeers. So they begin to train in secret.

Meanwhile the handsome Prince Louis, heir to the throne, is about to be crowned King on reaching his majority. His cousin Phillipe, who has been ruling France as Regent while Louis was a child, is less than happy at handing over power. But the Regent's nefarious plans are about to run into a most unexpected obstacle ...

Barbie and the three musketeers is about a country girl who wants to become a musketeer, on a adventure to save the prince. It starts off with Corinne setting off with a letter to Monsieur De Treville, fifteen crowns, a horse and her kitten Miette. She meets three other girls, Renee, Aramina, and Viveca, who also want to become musketeers.

It doesn't go quite as Corrinne planned at first, but then when the girls discover a plot to overthrow The Prince, the girls chances for their dreams to come true brighten, as you can only be appointed a musketeer by a member of the royal family.

I've been looking forward to this for a long time. It wasn't the best of all the Barbie films (in my opinion these are Thumbelina, and the Princess and the Pauper), but it was quite good. It had quite a few similar names and parts to the original book, which we are reading at the moment. Similarities include:- Corinne (d'Artagnon's daugther) going with a letter to see Monsieur De Treville, as d'Artagnon did in the book, the ball, and Corinne bumping into the other three (but they didn't challenge each others to duels like in the book). I don't know how the endings compare as we haven't finished the book yet.

Got this dvd for my little girls' 4th birthday.
She hasn't stopped watching it. After a couple of weeks she acts it out while watching it. She knows most of the script. She says she really likes it because there are no scary bits unlike a lot of Disney movies.
She now wants to be a Musketeer.
All for one and one for all.

Another one of the Barbie animated series movies. Brought this for my 4 year old daughter and she loves it. She watches it pretty much most nights and has the dolls now to - which she also plays with daily. The animation has improved a little compared to the older Barbie movies and theres a little action in this one to! This one i managed to sit through and watch with her on more than one occassion, others i cant bare to watch(im male). If you have a girl that likes all things girlie and Barbie then its a must buy. As usual with Amazon postage was quick and the price was the best i found. Thanks Amazon!

My daughter loves all the Barbie movies and has them all. However, with this one, the marketing started so early (last year) that I wondered if it would live up to the hype. This is not a girly princess movie, it's more about girl-power and even features the song Unbelievable by EMF so you get the kind of vibe they're aiming for. My daughter still loves it though although I am never going to buy her that £60 electronic cat that sings along with it....
