Barbie Mariposa & the Fairy Princess: Mariposa Doll

Barbie Mariposa unfolding wings
Features unfolding fairy wings. view larger
The sequel to Barbie Mariposa

Five years after the release of Barbie Mariposa, the butterfly fairy heroine returns in a story that takes her far beyond anything she's ever known! In Barbie Mariposa & the Fairy Princess, Mariposa is sent to Shimmervale to meet the crystal fairies and make peace with them.

New friends, new challenges

Mariposa is quick to make friends with Catania, a crystal fairy princess who hasn't flown for years. Catania's father, the King of Shimmervale, doesn't trust Mariposa. But she proves her worth when an old enemy of the crystal fairies returns, and Mariposa teams up with Princess Catania to save Shimmervale.

Butterfly fairy beauty

The Mariposa doll has extraordinary fairy wings – large and colorful ones, like all butterfly fairies. She keeps them folded around her like a dress, but at the push of a button on her necklace, they unfold to a spectacular size. A dial on her back lets you fold her wings back around her until her next flight.

Box Contains

1 x Mariposa doll with unfolding wings

Barbie Mariposa 1 Sept. 2013

PROS: I love her shoes, her dress, and her wings. The wings aren't as large an impediment to movement as I would have thought. Her legs bend and she can sit.

CONS: I don't really care for the look of the skirt when the wings are down. It doesn't look much like a skirt and the material looks cheap. The wings are not shiny on the back and so it doesn't make for an impressive look.

My doll's face is so so. If you've ever shopped for a doll in the store, you know not every doll looks exactly the same despite being the same doll. The eyes on the doll I received are too close together.

It takes a LOT of spinning to pin down the wings. My daughter had a lot of difficulty with this mechanism.

She will probably be unable to wear any other Barbie clothing because of the mechanics on her back used to lower the wings.

I really hate that it seems to be that piercing a doll's head with plastic ties to hold her in place is becoming standard procedure. Maybe it's me, but I always end up with plastic stuck in the doll's head. Wire around the neck will be fine to hold her in position.

3.5 - 4 STARS: My daughter actually likes this doll and plays with her along with her Disney Fairy dolls. And that's what matters most.

Display barbie; not compatible with other clothes or accessories. 28 Aug. 2013

My niece loves all things girly and this Barbie seemed like the perfect girly toy that she would love.

In theory:
Barbie + Fairy + Princess + Glitter + Satin + Pink + Purple = a sure win.

However, once the initial "Oh" factor wears off, this Barbie has limited play value as the wing mechanism is permanently attached to her back and stick out like a large square backpack which prevents any Barbie clothes from fitting her. The wings themselves do detach, but the large backpack mechanism is still there.

The one feature this Barbie has is the wing mechanism which is actually quite impressive. The large protruding mechanism mentioned above is what the large glittery wings are inserted to. Then turning the knob in one direction transforms the wings into a long satiny skirt by wrapping them around her legs. Turning the mechanism the other way unwraps the wings back into wings. Pushing further pops the wings out form the protruding mechanism.

Recommended for Barbie collectors or as part of a gift that consists of the Barbie Mariposa DVD. If you're looking for a single all-purpose Barbie this is not it.

Broke Quickly 26 Sept. 2013

My daughter loves the Mariposa movies and was excited to try the Barbie doll. The doll itself is very pretty with potential for a lot of fun. However, after assembling the wings and playing with the doll for less than an hour, the mechanism broke. Now we have a doll with limp wings and no way to fix it. It's also very limited in that you can't change the clothes easily nor take the wings off once you have them on. For the price, I guess I expected better quality.

Love it! 27 Dec. 2013

It's worthwhile to work with your child a bit to ensure they know to turn the crank in the back clockwise. Mine kept trying to go counter and I wonder if some of the broken ones mentioned in reviews might have been put through the same issue. So far my four year old loves this and she has proven to me that this Barbie can wear clothes other than the dress she came with. Anything with a low enough back or that has a fastener at the neck and waist can accommodate her giant "backpack".

A beautiful Barbie 17 Oct. 2013
By Christy - Published on
Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
My daughters love Barbie and have about 50 of them, a combination of mine, my mom's and now my daughters'. I wasn't surprised when both of my daughters said they wanted the new Mariposa doll I thought it would be nice to add to their collection (we don't actually have any of the fairies from the movies). Both my 6 and 7 year old like to fly her around, crank the wings down, and then let them flip up. But they loose interest in the doll relatively quickly. The arms have to be up for the wings to fold down or come up and she looks funny always being in that position. Neither of the girls had a problem cranking them down like other reviewers though. The wings are beautiful but as a dress it's just so-so. Mattel did a much better job in the movie making her wings look like a dress in comparison to the doll. Not a bad Barbie but does have a few problems.
