My daughter loves this but the passport is not well thought off. Basically it is just a pice of paper.

Finally, a Filipina Barbie with an Filipina face! 24 Jan 2013
By Lia - Published on Amazon.com
Durability:    Educational:    Fun:
So my husband bought this doll for me three days ago via Amazon.com, and it arrived today. First and foremost, I was incredibly impressed with how fast this purchase arrived. Second, I have to say that this is by far the best looking Filipina Barbie doll that Mattel has created. To compare and contrast this doll with the other two I have in my collection (90's generic Filipina Barbie in green "ethnic" outfit, and the 2000 "Tradisyong Filipina - Wedding Barbie" designed by Patis Tesoro) would almost be unfair as 10 to 20 years makes a big difference...but I'm going to do that anyways. =P

How does the doll compare in real life versus in pictures? The face-up/head sculpt is just gorgeous! The face-up, especially the lips, angle of the eyebrows, and the brown eyes really make this doll look Filipina. Key difference between the doll in real life versus the stock photos online is that the stock photos doll has thicker eyeliner than the one I got. For the die hard Barbie Collectors, the head sculpt is Goddess, the body type is Shani, the skin tone is LA Tan, eyelashes are painted on, and the clothes are NOT sewn on the body. The "Dolls of the World - Philippines" Barbie is part of the Pink Label collection, so it is accessible to anyone that has access to a toy store or the internet and can fork over $24.95 + tax. Price that husband paid for the doll on Amazon three days ago is on par with what Barbie Collector is selling them for: [...]. However, I have seen this doll already marked up beyond this price in other places (Target, Overstock, even Amazon) even before it's November 12, 2012 release date. The outfit is a pretty decent Barbie interpretation of the Maria Clara gown although the shawl isn't a shawl but carefully arranged lace.

Now how do the older generation of Filipina Barbies made for the Philippines market compare? My 90s Filipina Barbie was pretty much the low end $7 Barbie but with a California tan, dark brown free-flowing hair, and sort of brown eyes with a green Mestiza gown top with matching 90s mini-skirt. Great for its time as the combination of brown eyes AND brown hair with a tan was uncommon. However, face was definitely not that of a Filipina. Sad to say, but the Theresa doll, Hispanic doll, generic Asian doll, or even the African American doll had head sculpts that could be interpreted better as a Filipina Barbie than the one made for the Philippines market. Now the 2000 "Tradisyong Filipina" Barbies are definitely a step up from 90s Barbie with more authentic gowns, an even better head sculpt, more believable tan, brown eyes, dark hair in more traditional hairstyles, and better face-up. However, the price tag of $100+ coupled with the fact that the head sculpt was still just a slight Pacific Islander variation of a the Caucasian head sculpt does not help those young girls and boys trying to find a Filipina doll to identify with.

Pros about this doll: affordable ($25 + tax), moderately accessible, outfit definitely believable Barbie interpretation of Maria Clara outfit, hairstyle realistic, face-up very typical mestiza Filipina, head sculpt a good fit, and great conversation starter with family from the Philippines about tradition and culture. Cons about this doll: price range varies quite considerably wherever you go to shop for it, not easily found in physical stores (like Toys R Us, Target, Walmart, etc) when compared to other Dolls of the World Barbies even in high population Asian/Pacific Islander areas, bun does unravel a bit during shipping so if you want a mint doll get it in person, face-up/head sculpt may not be "Filipina enough" for some (husband thinks doll is 3/4 Caucasian...and he's Caucasian whereas both my 1st generation Filipino-American parents think she's really Filipino looking!), doll doesn't have a pet or food item like the other DofW Barbies (should have been the Philippine Eagle, a baby carabou, or at least a bunch of bananas or durian), and cultural tidbit of the Pahiyas Festival is a very specific region/culture of the Philippines that most cannot exactly relate to.

Overall, I am happy with this purchase by my husband. So happy in fact that I am waiting until the doll goes down in price to purchase another one for future daughter so she can have a Barbie doll she can relate to. If the other "ethnic" Barbie dolls are any indication, next generation of the Filipina Barbie may be better (like the ones for 2012 Indian and 2013 France) or disappointing (2012 China and 2011 Japan). Whatever the case maybe, this was definitely a great purchase.

So excited they finally made a different doll. I just wish they made more from other countries rather than the same countries over and over.
