Amazon.co.uk Review

Believing in oneself isn't always easy, especially when it seems like the whole world is against you, but Barbie and her fashion-designing aunt Millicent are both women with a strong sense of self and a propensity for hard work. When Barbie gets fired from the film set for expressing her artistic opinion and then Ken dumps her by phone, she spontaneously decides to go visit her aunt at her design house in Paris. Unbeknownst to Barbie, her aunt is closing up shop thanks to a new designer in town who's been stealing her designs. The two commiserate about giving up professions they love and begin to search for new hobbies until Millicent's coworker, budding designer Alice, changes everything with an amazing dress design and a legend about magical "flairies"--creatures who add sparkle and flare to the work of inspired designers around the world. Suddenly, Barbie, Millicent, and Alice find themselves in a race to design a whole new line of clothing in order to save Millicent's shop and the very existence of the magical flairies. Meanwhile, Ken is chasing Barbie across the world in an effort to make one grand romantic gesture that will finally show Barbie how he really feels about her. This brightly animated film is full of magic, extreme personalities, and an important message about believing in oneself and staying true to one's passion. (Ages 7 and older) --Tami Horiuchi

A New Direction? 24 Sep 2010
Format:DVD
As a massive fan of all the previous Barbie DVDs I'm really disappointed by Mattel's decision to axe Kelly Sheridan as the voice of Barbie and their move away from the classic princess stories towards more modern and fashion oriented tales.

The film was still enjoyable but to me a modern day Barbie film (with loads of twitter/facebook references) can never produce the same magical charm as a classic princess story and the warm fuzzy feeling at the end wasn't nearly as big as in previous offerings.

Barbie goes "rom-com" 10 Oct 2010
Format:DVD
and guess what - she's better than Jennifer Aniston. This film follows "A Mermaid Tale" and "Thumbelina" in being set in a modern environment but this one features a comedy sub-plot with Ken desparately trying to get back with Barbie but being frustrated at every turn. Like the two films above, its animation seems rougher, with the characters (especially Barbie herself) drawn more like Mattel's arch-rivals "Bratz". As other reviewers have noted, the actress voicing Barbie has been replaced, also a negative.

You can still play the "spot the character" game however: Eris (baddy in A Mermaid Tale) pops up as a shopper buying a dress; the truck drivers in Thumbelina are re-employed as taxi drivers; and the baddy from the Island Princess has a brief cameo at the beginning as a TV executive. Someone in the production team clearly had a bad experience with a girl called Raquel as the character who is Barbie's love rival in both this film and "The Barbie Diaries" is called this (and I think voiced by the same actress).

The bottom line - it's a decent entry into the Barbie canon, and if your young child has enjoyed any of the other Barbie films she will almost certainly love this one too.

I'll be honest; I was prepared to hate this movie. I disapprove of Mattel's decision to abandon fantasy films, fire Kelly Sheridan and put so much attention on Barbie's "acting career". But I gave it a chance, and I was pleasantly surprised.

Yes, it's a lot more "fashion-orientated" than earlier movies, but the story was strong and it was a lot of fun. I liked the characters, particularly Marie-Alecia, Delphine and Aunt Millicent. Ken also provides some comic relief with his journey to find Barbie.

I'd say it's worth giving a shot, at least. It was certainly better than Mermaid Tale.
