It would be a real shame if Barbershop got lumped in with all the other 'black'movies that are around.This is a great feelgood movie which combines comedy and drama to make a movie which makes you think and ultimately satisfies you.
Ice Cube plays Calvin who has inherited his fathers Barbershop in Chicago 2 years previously and is tired of not making much money,truth to tell he isnt poor its just he is into the type of get rich quick schemes which leave you poor.He sells the shop to local Mr Big Lester Wallace(KEITH DAVID) who dresses from the Shaft 1970's collection but then changes his mind.
He doesnt tell his band of fellow barbers led by Eddie(CEDRIC THE ENTERTAINER) who steals all the scenes he appears in as the old school barber,along with Jimmy -the know all college kid and feisty female barber Terri played by fellow rapper Eve who has issues over her cheating boyfriend and whoever is stealing her apple juice,there is also Ricky played by handsome newcomer MICHAEL EALY who may or not be involved in the films sub plot the hijacking of an ATM machine in which Anthony Anderson and Lahmard Tate play clueless thieves JD and Billy.Rounding out the crew is white jewish wanna be a black man Isaac Rosenberg and lovestruck African Dinka who has the hots for Terri but goes in vain.
The two pronged story of Calvins problems and the heist of the ATM dovetail nicely at the end and this is a well acted ,well made movie which should deserve a much wider releasen then it will probably get.Ice Cube delivers his best role to date and shows real promise as an actor,he is light years away from his NWA era angry-young-man.This movie is well worth watching and stands up to repeated viewings.

When I read a preview about Barbershop before it was released at the cinema, I was not really that impressed by how it sounded so I never went to see it at the cinema and when it was released to rent, it wasn't the first film I would pick up to rent but when my mate said he was going to get it out, I thought..."Lets give it a chance, what the heck!!"...and after the film had finished, my mate went to sleep and I put it on again. I love this film, so easy to watch and the characters are very easy to relate to even if Cedric (the Entertainer) can be quite hard to understand when you've had a few to many to drink!! Eve is just a goddess!!

This film is not your typical black movie its miles alway from films like juice and boyz in the hood and i must say its very refreshing to see this.
The film is funny from start to finish and it leaves you wanting more.
I was surprised by Eve's acting skills which are very good.
A must have film in your collection

Great comedy film
i loved this film, i first watched a few years ago with my boyfriend and decieded recently to buy my own copy and i'm glad i did.
