Product Description

Yoga expert Barbara Currie introduces yoga's seven amazing secrets, eight ten-minute workouts, and seven top diet tips. The workouts include: the Ten-Minute Miracle, Power Stretching, Advanced Power Stretch, Stay Young with Yoga, and four Power Shaping sessions designed to develop bottom, thighs, lower back, abdomen, arms and bust.

From Amazon.co.uk

With the slinky white leotards, the pastel set and the references to toning and firming, yoga purists might be quick to dismiss Barbara Currie’s Seven Secrets of Yoga as yoga for middle England. Yet Barbara Currie is the Delia Smith of the yoga world--it’s not just that what she does works, but she knows exactly how to make it work for the rest of us.

Though the title implies that this is a session divided into seven segments, there are in fact more than seven parts: a choice of two 10-minute miracles (beginners and advanced) recommended to start the day, followed by a series of six short sequences designed to work either as a sequence a day, or together in an entire, comprehensive session. Currie’s precise instruction covers balancing the body and mind, working the lower back and toning bottom and thighs, toning the tummy and waist, working the arms and neckline, stretching the entire body and relaxing.

Though the focus appears to be toning up, the real surprise is at the end when Currie cleverly reveals the seven secrets: yoga is good for shape, weight, energy, relaxation, concentration, flexibility and youth. This is a succinct and inspiring explanation of the philosophy of yoga.--Lorna V --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Oh the joy of finding a form of exercise that I, a confirmed couch potato, absolutely love.
This is my first encounter with Barb (as I like to call her) after she was recommended to me by a friend who regularly pops one of her earlier efforts into the video player.
Determined to start some form of exercise outside of bending over to pick up the TV guide, I took the plunge and I LOVE IT.
From the moment I met Barb, with her pristine white lycra and soft yet firm manner, I was hooked. She takes you through eight different sections, all of which last for 10 minutes each, and makes even a total novice like me feel like I am really getting somewhere.
Each section works on different areas of the body and includes stretches, balances and toning. There are also two 'ten-minute miracle' sections, one of them advanced, which can easily be slotted into your day and leave you feeling relaxed and well-stretched.
The positions (or asanas, if you are a pedant) are amazing. Even though it might seem highly unlikely that you will ever get your forehead to touch your calves, Barb is very positive, reminding beginners that they will improve each time they practise as yoga is 'very progressive'. She's right!
Even if you are not a beginner, this video is still really good as there are two helpers who demonstrate the easy and advanced forms of each position.
I now do two or three sections from this video most days of the week and I try to go through the entire thing at least once. I find that I crave yoga by the time I get home from a long day at work. I've even started sneaking off to the office loo occasionally to do a couple of tension relieving stretches.

This video was certainly worth waiting for!! Barbara Currie's latest video "Seven Secrets of Yoga" is her best video yet, and is a great addition to her other Yoga video collections.
This video is broken down into no less than 8 ten minute sections, which are absolutely PERFECT for if you want to do just one at a time, or combine 2 or 3 for a longer workout.
The sections are as follows:
1) 10 Minute Miracle
2) Advanced Power Stretch
3) Power Shaping- Yoga Balances
4) Power Shaping- Bottoms & Thighs
5) Power Shaping- Abdominals
6) Power Shaping- Arms & Bust
7) Power Stretching
8) Stay Young with Yoga (inverted postures).
Plus Barbara then talks about the 7 secrets of Yoga, what they are, and why they work so well.
I really liked the way this video was laid out, with the different types of postures grouped together. Barbara also covers some new movements not covered in any of her other videos so far- I felt that this video was very up to date and "moved with the times" so to speak.
The setting for the video was very pleasant - soft pink backdrops, with bubble screens (think lava lamps but with clear bubbles instead) which was very modern and VERY relaxing.
In this video, Barbara and co. have the same encouraging and helpful demonstrations, by now characteristic of all of her videos, but I felt that this video's attitude was slightly more 'grown up' and mature (she even has a new hairstyle) as parts of her other videos can tend to be a little school-nurselike at times. Barbara is still Barbara however, but to me, she seemed more mellow and gentle whilst still being briskly encouraging. And she looks better than ever! Surely there is no better testiment to Yoga's effectiveness than Barbara herself.

I LOVE this DVD. I have tried Yoga classes before, but always found it a bit slow, but this is perfectly paced with beginner, intermediate and advanced levels for most of the postures. You wont believe how quickly your flexibility comes back when you start doing Barbara's routines.
Just by doing her early morning stomach exercises (they take less than two minutes) every day, I've noticed such a change. I've always fought for a flat stomach, but ended up with muscle and a layer of wobble on top. You will notice a big difference on your 'love handles' and midriff in weeks.
I actively look forward to my workout and love the fact that I can do all sections or just cherry pick one or two if I dont have time.

I have tried several yoga videos/DVDs over the last 2 or 3 years; they have all ended up at the school Christmas fete for various reasons such as being monotonous or pretentious. Not this one. After all this time I still practise from '7 secrets' almost every morning, an unheard of amount of time for someone like me who is apt to quickly lose interest. It is the best of her series.
Barbara's style of speech and delivery is a matter of personal taste. Personally, I have never found her irritating, and don't mind the reruns of instructions as it refreshes my memory on what I'm aiming for. The grouping of the moves into 10 minute sections is a masterstroke, making it easy to plan your yoga.
The 3-levels-of-difficulty approach also works well. With some moves, I can easily do the advanced (Barbara's) position, whereas in others - let's face it!- it's never going to happen. However, Barbara is so encouraging, I always think maybe this week will be the week.
I agree with the reviewer who said that one side of the body is frequently given more time to stretch than the other - this is annoying, as you then feel rushed when not allowed the same time to do the other side. The setting however is pleasant with bubbles, pinkness and relaxing background music.
Some people look down on video/DVD yoga as not being the 'real thing'. Maybe too user-friendly for the serious yogis, it's great for us Ms Averages seeking a small oasis of calm before the kids get up. On your new flokati rug, there's less pressure (than in a class) to go that bit extra. 'Never strain!' says Barbs. Perhaps this is why I'm still using this 3 years later. The DVD format is best, to get quickly to the desired section.
7 Secrets is a great introduction to yoga.
