Amazon.co.uk Review

With the slinky white leotards, the pastel set and the references to toning and firming, yoga purists might be quick to dismiss Barbara Currie’s Seven Secrets of Yoga as yoga for middle England. Yet Barbara Currie is the Delia Smith of the yoga world--it’s not just that what she does works, but she knows exactly how to make it work for the rest of us.

Though the title implies that this is a session divided into seven segments, there are in fact more than seven parts: a choice of two 10-minute miracles (beginners and advanced) recommended to start the day, followed by a series of six short sequences designed to work either as a sequence a day, or together in an entire, comprehensive session. Currie’s precise instruction covers balancing the body and mind, working the lower back and toning bottom and thighs, toning the tummy and waist, working the arms and neckline, stretching the entire body and relaxing.

Though the focus appears to be toning up, the real surprise is at the end when Currie cleverly reveals the seven secrets: yoga is good for shape, weight, energy, relaxation, concentration, flexibility and youth. This is a succinct and inspiring explanation of the philosophy of yoga.--Lorna V

Bendalicious!!! 18 Feb 2002
By A Customer
Format:VHS Tape
Oh the joy of finding a form of exercise that I, a confirmed couch potato, absolutely love.
This is my first encounter with Barb (as I like to call her) after she was recommended to me by a friend who regularly pops one of her earlier efforts into the video player.
Determined to start some form of exercise outside of bending over to pick up the TV guide, I took the plunge and I LOVE IT.
From the moment I met Barb, with her pristine white lycra and soft yet firm manner, I was hooked. She takes you through eight different sections, all of which last for 10 minutes each, and makes even a total novice like me feel like I am really getting somewhere.
Each section works on different areas of the body and includes stretches, balances and toning. There are also two 'ten-minute miracle' sections, one of them advanced, which can easily be slotted into your day and leave you feeling relaxed and well-stretched.
The positions (or asanas, if you are a pedant) are amazing. Even though it might seem highly unlikely that you will ever get your forehead to touch your calves, Barb is very positive, reminding beginners that they will improve each time they practise as yoga is 'very progressive'. She's right!
Even if you are not a beginner, this video is still really good as there are two helpers who demonstrate the easy and advanced forms of each position.
I now do two or three sections from this video most days of the week and I try to go through the entire thing at least once. I find that I crave yoga by the time I get home from a long day at work. I've even started sneaking off to the office loo occasionally to do a couple of tension relieving stretches.
Even after about two weeks, I was amazed at the effects on my body and nearly passed out as I brushed my hair one morning and noticed the hugely improved muscle definition in my upper arms.
I cannot recommend this video highly enough. If you are looking to buy a yoga video, don't be swayed by the irritating Geri Halliwell effort. Choose Barb - she's the best!

Realising that I was beginning to feel my age and wanting to be a little trimmer and fitter, I decided to venture into the world of Yoga. I chose this video purely from reading the comments of other Amazon customers and have NOT been disappointed.
It is a BRILLIANT video for beginners. The way it is divided into 10-minute slots means that no one can say they don't have time for exercise!
I didn't want to get too "heavy" to start with and didn't want a lot of the meditation or mental workout often associated with Yoga, just a gentle way to get fitter and become more relaxed. I found that Barbara Currie seems to know exactly how to target a first timer with her clear explanations of each move and her two companions showing me the different stages of each one - very good for keeping your morale up!
I am now completely hooked after only 7 weeks and do 20 - 30 minutes EVERY morning before my busy day starts and often find time for another one or two 10-minute sessions later in the day.
My flexibility has certainly improved and my waistline is slowly reducing too.
All in all, AN EXCELLENT BUY!

This video was certainly worth waiting for!! Barbara Currie's latest video "Seven Secrets of Yoga" is her best video yet, and is a great addition to her other Yoga video collections.

This video is broken down into no less than 8 ten minute sections, which are absolutely PERFECT for if you want to do just one at a time, or combine 2 or 3 for a longer workout.

The sections are as follows:

1) 10 Minute Miracle
2) Advanced Power Stretch
3) Power Shaping- Yoga Balances
4) Power Shaping- Bottoms & Thighs
5) Power Shaping- Abdominals
6) Power Shaping- Arms & Bust
7) Power Stretching
8) Stay Young with Yoga (inverted postures).

Plus Barbara then talks about the 7 secrets of Yoga, what they are, and why they work so well.

I really liked the way this video was laid out, with the different types of postures grouped together. Barbara also covers some new movements not covered in any of her other videos so far- I felt that this video was very up to date and "moved with the times" so to speak.

The setting for the video was very pleasant - soft pink backdrops, with bubble screens (think lava lamps but with clear bubbles instead) which was very modern and VERY relaxing.

In this video, Barbara and co. have the same encouraging and helpful demonstrations, by now characteristic of all of her videos, but I felt that this video's attitude was slightly more 'grown up' and mature (she even has a new hairstyle) as parts of her other videos can tend to be a little school-nurselike at times. Barbara is still Barbara however, but to me, she seemed more mellow and gentle whilst still being briskly encouraging. And she looks better than ever! Surely there is no better testiment to Yoga's effectiveness than Barbara herself. Looking at least half her age, she carefully and thoroughly guides you through all of the moves, always stressing the point that this is YOUR yoga, and not a competition, and you should therefore always go at your own pace and follow the demonstrator doing the beginners stage of the movement, if you ever feel uncomfortable with the full movement at first.

I found this video to be really excellent, very helpfully put together, very clear and easy to follow and very good fun to do over and over again!
